    Notes
    • CORRIGANVILLE — It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Wolverton DeLoss Murphy on Monday, Nov. 30, at the age of 89. A longtime resident of Corriganville, he was born on Sept. 2, 1920, in Swanton. He leaves behind his loving wife, Margie Ellen (Clinedinst) Murphy; siblings, Ethel Helen McCray (Edward) of Ellerslie, Duane Ellsworth Murphy (Zona) of Canton, Ohio, and Frederick Clayton Murphy (Charlotte) of Mount Savage. He is also survived by his children, William DeLoss Murphy (Ginny) of Blacksburg, Va., Patricia Ellen Harding (Mel) of Canton, Doretha Lamoine Murphy (Jean-Pierre Baribeau) of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, Jimmie Randolph Murphy (Elizabeth) of LaVale, Roger Alan Murphy (Michelle) of Hyndman, Pa., and Marsha Lynne Stine (Leonard) of Waynesboro, Pa.; as well as 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grand-children. A graduate of Allegany High School, DeLoss served as an anesthetist in the 40th Field Hospital in Europe during World War II, and was a retiree of Celanese Fibers Company. He was a long time member of and served on the Board of Directors of Trinity Assembly of God Church, Cumberland. For more than 50 years, he was an active member of the Corriganville Volunteer Fire Company, being named “Fireman of the Year” on several occasions. One of the fire company’s first EMT’s, he continued to re-certify and function in that capacity until the age of 86. He served as the fire company’s chaplain for many years and was also a member and former officer of the A. Mike Walters Chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Firefighters. He was a founding member of the Corriganville Lighting and Improvement Association, and in that capacity helped organize and lead the Memorial Day celebrations in Corriganville for many years. Always there to lend a helping hand, he was active in the church and community in various other capacities as well. Mr. Murphy was preceded in death by his father, James Randolph Murphy; mother, Hattie Ethel (Durst) Murphy; and younger brother, Staff Sergeant James Randolph Murphy Jr., who was the first local casualty in the European operations of World War II. Family and friends will be received at the Hafer Funeral Service, P.A., Chapel of the Hills, 1302 National Highway, LaVale, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and on Thursday from noon until 1 p.m. Corriganville Volunteer Fire Department will hold a memorial service at the funeral home on Wednesday at 7 p.m. A funeral and celebration of Wolverton DeLoss Murphy’s life will be held at the funeral home on Thursday at 1 p.m. with Pastor Gerald Wagner officiating. Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens, where military honors will be accorded by Old Rail Post 6025, V.F.W., Mount Savage. Memorial contributions may be made to the Corriganville Volunteer Fire Department, PO Box 187, Corriganville, MD 21524. Perhaps Wolverton DeLoss Murphy is best described in this memorial by Mr. Dean Hancox: “Mr. Murphy – a remarkably joyful and positive person whose Cash Valley corn and numerous other vegetables were the delight of our table on National Highway. Even more remarkable (having taught his children) were his and his wife’s parenting skills and the quality of the children’s upbringing and the family in general. His service to the community was legendary as was his very keen intellect and memory!” Sincere and heartfelt thanks to Dr. Ethelann Murray, Bridget Bonham, RN, Cheryl Gearhart, RN, and Joanne Ashworth, RN of the Martinsburg West Virginia Medical Center for their exceptional and dedicated care. A special thank you to nurses Jane Adams and Ann Porter, as well as the aides, of Home Hospice Services, WMHS.
