Wife of James Fenimore Cooper. Daughter of John Peter De Lancey. She
married James in 1811. While she is not famous in her own right, were it not for her influence, we might not know the name of James Fenimore Cooper. Apparently it was his habit to read aloud to his wife. After expressing his disatisfaction with a novel and saying he could do better, his wife challenged him to do so. Although his first novel was not a success, he wrote thiry-one more. In 1826, she and James along with their children moved to Europe, where they spent the next seven years living in France, Switzerland, and Italy. When the couple moved back to the United States, they returned to his childhood home in Cooperstown which is named for James' father. There they remained and there they are buried.
The family was listed on September 26 on page 90 of 93 of the 1850 US Federal Census for Ostego, Ostego County, New York as follows: J F Cooper, age 60, author; Susan A, age 58; Charlotte, age 33; Susan A, age 37; Marie, age 31; Paul, age 26; and Amy Clayton, age 33. James was born in New Jersey. Amy Clayton was born in England. The rest were born in New York.
