- Milton Younkin and family attended the funeral of Mrs. Younkin's brother-in-law, Mervin Carey, who was killed by a bolt of lightning one day last week. Meyersdale Commercial, Aug. 7, 1913.
The worst reported result, (article covers storm damage) however, was the killing of Mervin Carey and his team of two horses at a point between the two Savages. He had come to Frostburg with a load of mine timber, and, returning, the storm caught him. He took refuge in a shed, which, shortly after, a boy discovered on fire. Going to ascertain cause of the fire, the lad found Mr. Carey and horses lying dead. The fire was quickly extinguished. Mr. Carey was a son of James Carey, both well known citizens of District No. 9, Garrett county. Wife and one child are bereft. Evening Times, Cumberland, Maryland, July 30, 1913.
