Virgil D. McKenzie, Sr., son of Gallitzen, wrote a McKenzie Family History Book, which hopefully will be added to the McKenzies of Early Maryland web site someday linked to his name. He wrote:
"My father Gallitzen McKenzie was named after the first Catholic priest that came to Cumberland, Maryland. And, to Cresaptown, Maryland. Before the first Catholic church was built in Cumberland, Maryland and Cresaptown, Maryland. The priest rode a horse back and forth. He was known as a circuit rider. He was a missionary. Father Demetrius Galitizin. Whose parish extended from the Susquehanna to the Potomac." (Page 40)
He entered the service 26 Sep 1917 and was discharged 21 May 1919. (Page 61).
