FROSTBURG — Mrs. Mary H. Layman, 86, formerly of Borden Shaft, died yesterday at the Dulaney-Towson Nursing Home, Towson, where she had been a patient 16 months. She had been in failing health two years. Born in Shaft, she was a daughter of the late Robert and Mary (Gibson) Harvey. Her husband, Ernest Layman Sr. preceded her in death. She was a member of the Shaft Methodist Church. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Milton R. Smith and Mrs. Charles I. Norris, both of Towson; one son, Lt. Col. Ernest Layman Jr., Ft. George G. Meade; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. The body will be returned to the Durst Funeral Home where friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today. A service will be conducted there tomorrow at 1 p.m. Rev. Louis L. Emerick will officiate and interment will be in Frostburg Memorial Park. The Cumberland Sunday Times, July 24, 1967

TOWSON — Mrs. Alice Smith, 67, died at her home here July 24 following an extended illness. Born at Shaft, she was a daughter of the late Ernest and Mary Layman. She was preceded in death by her husband, Milton R. Smith. Mrs. Smith was a graduate of the old State Normal School, Frostburg. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Betty S. Green, Houston, Tex., and Mrs. Anne S. Janes, Dallas, Tex.; a son, Milton R. Smith Jr., Timonium; a sister, Mrs. Mary L. Norris, Towson; a brother, Lt. Col. Ernest M. Layman (USA-Ret.)
