Avilton, Md., Oct. 16 — Funeral rites for Mrs. Emma Catherine Wilhelm Crowe, who died last Friday evening, October 8, at her home near Avilton, were conducted Monday morning from St. Ann's Catholic church by Rev. Joseph A. Weber of Frostburg. Mrs. Crowe was the wife of Edward Crowe and daughter of Mrs. Ada Wilhelm of Avilton. She is survived by the following children: Mrs. Paul Bugosh, Fay Crowe, of Frostburg; Eddie of Lonaconing; Ellas, Gilbert, Glen, Mabel, Betty, Mary, Emma May, and infant son, all at home. She was a sister of Mrs. Harry McKenzie, Grantsville; Mrs. Meta Anderson, Frostburg; Mrs. Harry Russell, Barton; Mrs. Marshall Broadwater and Elizabeth, Avilton; Frances Wiling, Leonard and Julius, Thomas, Asa, Floyd, all of Avilton. ESSEX — On Friday, Feb. 8, 2013, Ida C. Morgan, 100, of Essex, passed away at her home. She was the daughter of the late Edward and Emma (Wilhelm) Crowe. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Paul Bugosh and John Morgan; three brothers, Edward, Ellis, Gilbert Crowe; and two sisters, Faye Garlitz and Mary Engle. Ida is survived by her remaining brothers and sisters, Mabel Horn, Essex, Betty Garlitz, Sheffield Lake, Ohio, Emma Walker, Avilton, Glenn and Ronnie Crowe both of Amherst, Ohio; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Born on Oct. 8, 1912 in Avilton, she lived on a farm with her family. At 18, she began her career at the Celanese Corporation, then moved to Essex, where she worked for Free State Products. Ida kept busy through the years learning new skills at the Essex Senior Center. It was there she learned how to paint, garden and create ceramics. She even learned and mastered the art of quilling. Ida was so skilled with her crafts, she won several awards for her paintings, some of which have even appeared in the Baltimore Sun over the years. She celebrated her 100th birthday with family and friends at the old family farm. Ida received a citation from the Governor and a birthday card from the President of United States acknowledging her as a centurion. Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., 179 Miller St., Grantsville, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held in the St. Ann Catholic Church on Monday, Feb. 11, 2013 at 2 p.m. with Father Ed Hendricks officiating. AVILTON - Ellis Charles Crowe, 78, of Avilton, died Thursday, Nov. 19, 1992 at his residence. Born April 16, 1914 in Avilton, he was the son of the late Edward L. and Emma C. (Wilhelm) Crowe. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Ellis C. Crowe, Jr. Mr. Crowe was employed as a construction worker with Orrie Construction Co. Local 616, Laborer's Union, and was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, Frostburg, and St. Ann's Shrine, Avilton. He was also a charter member of the Grantsville Lions Club and a member of the National Rifle Association. Survivors include his wife of 52 years, the former Nora C. McKenzie; three sons, Donald O. Crowe, Bowie, Nevin D. Crowe, Cumberland, Kevin D. Crowe, and wife, Deborah, Charleston, W.Va.; two daughters, Edna M. McKenzie, and husband, Robert V., Juanita C. (Crowe) Garlitz, 92, of Lorain, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family early Sunday, June 15, 2008 at Community Health Partners, Lorain, following a brief illness. She was born April 9, 1916 in Lords, Md., to the late Edward L. and Emma K. (Wilhelm) Crowe. She was preceded in death by husband, Paul E. Garlitz on July 15, 1977; her brothers, Ellis Crowe and Gilbert Crowe; and her sister Mary Engle. Mrs. Garlitz moved over sixty years ago from Maryland to Lorain where she has resided for the remainder of her life. She was a faithful member of St. Anthony of Padua Church, Lorain, where she generously volunteered her time and efforts. Mrs. Garlitz was a member of the church's Marian Guild and formerly was a member of the P. T. U. of the St. Anthony School. She loved cooking and baking and she enjoyed sharing her baked goods with relatives and friends. Mrs. Garlitz is survived by her loving son, Gilbert G. (Iris) Garlitz of Amherst, Ohio; her daughters, Bonnie G. Garlitz with whom she made her home, Inez L. BERRYVILLE, Va. — Edward L. Crowe, 94, of Berryville, Va., died Friday, Jan. 18, 2013, at his home. Born May 26, 1918, in Avilton, he was the son of the late Edward Loar and Emma Catherine (Wilhelm) Crowe. He was preceded in death by his wartime bride, Velda Patricia (Davies) Crowe of Ebbw Vale, South Wales; two brothers, Ellis Charles and Gilbert Sylvester Crowe; and two sisters, Faye Genevieve Garlitz and Mary Elaine Engle. Mr. Crowe leaves behind two adoring children, Edwina Rae Crowe, Berryville and Graham Allen Crowe and wife Mary, Prattville, Ala.; five grandchildren, Christopher and Chad Crowe, Frankie Keedy and wife, GG, Trevor Keedy and wife, Jennifer, Alison (Keedy) Plummer and husband, Robert; six great-grandchildren, Christian and Addison Plummer, Aaron, Allie and Ami Cain and Amber Stubbs. Edward is also survived by his remaining brothers and sisters, Ida Morgan and Mable Horn, both of Baltimore; Betty Garlitz, Sheffield Lake, Ohio; Emma Walker, Frostburg; Glenn and Ronnie Crowe, both of Amherst, Ohio as well as numerous beloved nieces and nephews. Edward was a U.S. Army veteran of World War Two and served two tours of duty from March 1941 until November 1948 in the 160th Station Hospital Unit, 8th Airborne Division, as a medic and hazardous ambulance driver receiving the European, African, Middle Eastern Service Ribbon, a Good Conduct Medal, the American Service Ribbon, World War 2 Victory Ribbon and the European Campaign Medal. Ed or Eddie as he was known worked at the Celanese Plant near Cresaptown for 40 years. Ed helped to and supervised the production of cellulose acetate, fabrics and yarns for commercial and military applications. Ed was also a member of the AFL-CIO Local Union 1874, where he was instrumental in defending workers rights and was a leader in negotiating contracts for his fellow employees. Ed was appointed as a trial magistrate of Garrett County by Governor J. Millard Tawes for four two year terms. Mr. Crowe was the youngest trial magistrate in Maryland at the time. Ed was elected to a four year term on the Democratic State Central Committee. In keeping with his military background, Mr. Crowe was also active in the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Lonaconing, serving as commander of both organizations and for several years, assisting with returning veterans. Mr. Crowe also assisted the Lonaconing Ambulance Squad with calls when needed. The family will receive friends at the Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., 179 Miller St., Grantsville, on Tuesday, Jan. 22, from 2 to 4 p.m. A Catholic mass will take place at the St. Ann Mission Church, Avilton, on Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013, at 11 a.m. (8043 Avilton-Lonaconing Road, Exit 24, Lower New Germany Road, drive 2 miles, the church is on the right). He was also preceded in death by his wife, Lois Josephine Resh; a brother, Ellis Crowe; and a sister, Mary Engle. Mr. Crowe was a steelworker for Armco Steel, Baltimore, who retired in 1982. He was of the Catholic faith and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He is survived by three brothers, Edward Crowe, Lonaconing, Glenn and Ronald Crowe, both of Ohio; five sisters, Ida Morgan and Mabel Horn, both of Baltimore, Faye Garlitz and Betty Garlitz, both of Ohio and Emma Walker, Lonaconing; a number of nieces and nephews including, Mark Resh, Baltimore, whom he raised, as well as Tom Resh, Barbara Ristway and Bill Resh. Mary passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 21, 2005, surrounded by her loving family. Born Nov. 30, 1930, in Lords, she was the daughter of the late Edward L. and Emma K. (Wilhelm) Crowe. In addition to her parents, she was preceded by one special brother, Ellis Crowe. Mary was a loving and proud mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, mother-in-law, twin, aunt, sister, friend, and neighbor. 'Maw' was an amazing, brave, and compassionate lady. She was fun, full of life, and had a great sense of humor, and she was generous, dignified, and a mentor to many. She was a member of St. Michaels Catholic Church, Frostburg, the Catholic Daughters of America, Farrady Unit 24 American Legion Auxiliary, Women of the Moose 348, Eagles Aerie Auxiliary 1273, and was an active member in the community where she volunteered many years of service. Mary shared her talent of delicious cooking at St. Michael's cafeteria. Being an exceptional caregiver enabled her to touch many lives, and knowing Mary made you a better person. Mary is survived by her three devoted children, Daniel L. Engle and wife Mary 'Jr.' Poolesville, Roxanne Sanford and husband David, Frostburg, and Leslie Weaver and husband Kenny, Long Stretch. She leaves behind her eight grandchildren whom she adored, Heather Mason and husband Derek, Swanton, Jillian Wilks and fiancé Matthew Fridley, Cumberland, Kenneth Engle and wife Meghan, Hanover, PA, Jacqueline Wilks and fiancé Dustin Davis, Hartford, CT, Nicholas Engle, Poolesville, Kenny and Justin Weaver, at home, and Jonathan Sanford, at home. She also leaves behind her three great-grandchildren whom she equally adored, Hayden and Avah Mason and Emily Fridley. The couple was married October 3, 1946 in First Methodist Church by Rev. Watson E. Holley. Their attendants were Miss Agnes Wilhelm and Norvel McKenzie. Mrs. Opel is the daughter of Julius Wilhelm and the late Mrs. Pearl Wilhelm. Her husband is the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Opel. They are the parents of three sons, Dale, David and Bruce. FROSTBURG - Beatrice Colleen Opel, 91, of Frostburg, and formerly of Longstretch, died Friday, April 05, 2019, at Goodwill Mennonite Home, Grantsville. Born Nov. 14, 1927, in Garrett Co., she was the daughter of the late Julius and Pearl (Crowe) Wilhelm. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Earl Edward Opel; one sister, Agnes Carey; one half-brother, Lester Hunter; one granddaughter, Candy Sue Opel; and one great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Magruder. Beatrice and her husband, Earl, owned and operated The Long Stretch Market. She was a member of the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, a Church Board Member, and the Homemaker's Club. She was a lifetime member of the Eastern Garrett Co. Firemen's Ladies Auxiliary. She loved spending her summer months in Garrett Co. and wintertime in New Smyrna Beach, Fla., where she volunteered many hours at the Fish Memorial Hospital Auxiliary's "Pink Door." She is survived by three sons, Dale (Rose) Opel, David (Dottie) Opel and Bruce Opel; six grandchildren, Jesse (Lisa) Opel, Lori (Jimmy) Magruder, David (Brandi) Opel, Brandon Opel, Jason Opel and Justin Opel; nine great-grandchildren, Emily and Alexis Opel, Madilynn and Molly Magruder, Tiffany, Devon and Drew Opel, Adalyn and Kyra Opel. Agnes Marie (Wilhelm) Carey, 86, of Frostburg, passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, Aug. 5, 2016. Born Nov. 18, 1929, in Avilton, to Julius and Pearl (Crowe) Wilhelm. She is preceded in death by her parents and sons, Douglas Carey and Roger Carey. Mrs. Carey was a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church and Ladies Aid, a lifetime member of Eastern Garrett Volunteer Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary and a member of the Farm Bureau. She was the senior center manager for Garrett County Office for Aging with 12 years of service. Agnes worked after graduation in Ohio Woolworth's Diner and became assistant manager, moving home in 1949 and married James. She was a homemaker well-known for her great cooking and baking. Agnes was a dedicated community volunteer all her life at church and Eastern Garrett Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary putting endless hours in support. She loved her country life living and working on the farm, gardening, canning and cooking. She and James loved dancing together and also loved bowling as hobbies. Surviving is her husband of 66 years, James A. Carey; children, Julius Carey and wife, Karmen, Susan Carey-Powell and husband, Billy, Darin Carey and Carrie Shaffer; grandchildren, Christopher Carey, Anthony Carey, Shanna Powell, Jesse Powell, Sadie Powell, Lydia Powell, Ethan Carey, Darius Carey and Harley Shaffer; four great-granddaughters and one-great grandson; a sister, Beatrice Opel and half-brother, Lester Hunter; and numerous nieces and nephews. Donald Owen "Donnie" Crowe, age 67, of Avilton died suddenly Sunday, April 22, 2018, with his loving wife, Rita, by his side. Born Aug. 30, 1950, in Frostburg, he was the son of the late Ellis and Nora (McKenzie) Crowe. He was preceded in death by his older brother, Ellis Jr. "Sonny" Crowe. His sister by choice, Barbara Lee Hammonds, Clearville, Pa., died April 19. He leaves behind his anguished wife, Rita (Hummel) Crowe; his beloved daughter, Dana Lynn Wentlejewski and husband, Joe, Arnold. He was PopPop to his beautiful granddaughters, Alana Ogilvie and Drew Wentlejewski. He is also survived by his closest brother, Nevin Crowe, Avilton; two special nephews, Jeff Jenkins, Frostburg, and Tim Jenkins, Hagerstown; two sisters, Edna Mae McKenzie, Grantsville, and Juanita Stoyka, Ohio; and a brother, Kevin Crowe, Charles Town, W.Va., as well as numerous nieces and nephews and Crowe cousins. He has two aunts, Emma Mae Walker, local, and Betty Garlitz, Ohio; and two uncles, Glenn and Ronald Crowe, Ohio. Among his closest friends and chosen family were Paula and Terence Casey, Bowie, and Judy and Gib Devey, Fredericksburg, Va. Extra special friends who remain behind are Sid and Billy Turner, Ray Miller and Bill Hemmis, local, Andy Day and Gil Day, Dry Run, Pa., Randy Steck, Annapolis, and Mike Vocke, Dry Run. Don retired as a regional manager for FPIS Inc. of Ocoee, Fla., in 2012, and had worked in management roles throughout the country for SCS Inc. Don served as Santa Claus with Rita as his Elfie throughout the community. He has been an avid hunter since his childhood and loved to hunt and be in the woods, where he died. He delighted in meeting people and having fun with his friends, of which there are many. Don hosted many family reunions and gatherings at Crowes Rest, where he was always the life of the party. He traveled extensively with Rita to places near and far, from Africa to Alaska and Hawaii, and last year to Iceland. At his request, his body has been cremated. FROSTBURG - Douglas James Carey, 18, Star Route, died Tuesday at Sacred Heart Hospital of injuries he sustained when he fell from a moving car Monday night. He was a son of James and Agnes (Wilhelm) Carey of Star Route. Surviving, in addition to his parents, are two brothers, Julius and Darin, and a sister, Susan, all at home, and his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Wilhelm, RD 1, Frostburg. A 1969 graduate of Northern High School at Accident, Carey participated in football and wrestling. He was given honorable mention by the Tri-Valley Conference in football and won second place in District 1 wrestling competition. He was a member of the Lettermen's Club and Mt.
