Note from Genie Ragan, January 26, 2011: Grace Viola Stevey, was born out of wedlock to Julia Stevey and Paul Clancey. They never married. Julia was the daughter of Hester Winebrenner and the infamous Alexander Stevey (the polygamist). She was the second wife of Frank Thomas Winebrenner. Three children were born during her marriage to Frank, but he disowned two due to their negro appearance. In the census there was a black "boarder" who lived with them and it appears he may have fathered the two boys. Frank gave Julia custody of the two and kept the other children. Olin was one of the boys and is listed as black on his WWI draft registration card. Can't remember whether it was Noah or Frank who went along with Olin to Julia. After their divorce, she married Frank's brother, John Ellsworth (2nd wife, Sarah E. McKenzie was his first wife) and Grace ended up marrying one of his sons, John Olin. Grace always used the name Stevey, until later in life, then started using Clancey as her maiden name. Alexander Stevey had at least six families that we know of and was given to telling tall tales. He claimed previous wives died even though they were still living and exaggerated the number of children he sired. I have some articles on him, he was a dandy. Five wives after Hester Winebrenner, he ended up going back to her, where he eventually died. I believe after all the stuff came out in the paper about him that Grace wanted to disassociate herself with the Steveys and that's why she started using Clancey. She went to the paper and revealed some truths about him.
Grace married John Olin Winebrenner on 27 Aug 1907 in First English Baptist Church, Frostburg, Maryland. John (son of John Ellsworth Winebrenner and Sarah E. McKenzie) was born on 11 May 1886; died on 9 Feb 1942 in Frostburg, Allegany County, Maryland. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
