    FROSTBURG — George Harvey Layman, 68, of Shaft, died today in Miners Hospital, where he had been a patient five weeks. He was the husband of the late Katherine (Long) Layman. Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Gilbert Minnick, Wilmington Del.; Mrs. James Dawson, Washington; Mrs. George Drew, Midlothian, and Mrs. Clifford Bevan Jr., Frostburg; four sons, Raymond Layman, Shaft; Charles and Paul Layman, both of Baltimore, and George Layman, Frostburg; five sisters, Mrs. Nellie Byrnes, Mrs. Samuel Neat, and Mrs. Joseph Koelker, all of Cumberland; Mrs. C. J. Wolfe, Hagerstown, and Mrs. Fuller Davis, Frostburg; two brothers, Benjamin Layman, Syracuse, N. Y., and Lawrence Layman, Alexandria, Va.; 21 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was a retired Celanese worker and a member of Shaft Methodist Church. The body is at the residence, where services will be held Sunday at 3:30 p. m. Rev.     Mildred L. Minnick, 98, of New Castle and formerly of Lewes, passed away in Wilmington Sunday, Jan. 29, 2006, after a long illness. Mildred was born Oct. 16, 1907, in Frostburg, Md. She was employed by Amalgamated Leather Co. until her retirement in 1972. Previously, Mrs. Minnick was employed by Delaware Memorial Hospital. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Lewes for 18 years. In her earlier years, she attended Holloway Terrace Baptist Church in New Castle, where she taught Sunday School from 1950 to 1959. Her beloved husband of 56 years, Gilbert Minnick, passed away in 1983. She is survived by two sons, Paul Minnick of Elsmere and Ronald Minnick of Lewes. Burial was in Gracelawn Memorial Park in New Castle. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Presbyterian Church of Lewes, PO Box 612, Lewes 19958; or to the Delaware chapter of the Alzheimer's Association, 2306 Kirkwood Hwy., Wilmington 19805. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Gwendolyn Layman; a daughter, Mrs. Barbara Ann Stine, Hagerstown; a son, John W. Layman, Shaft; three brothers, Charles L. Layman and Paul L. Layman, both of Baltimore; George L. Layman, Frostburg; four sisters, Mrs. Gilbert Minnich, New Castle, Del.; Mrs. James Dawson, Silver Spring; Mrs. Helen R. Drew, Frostburg, and Mrs. Ernest Densmore, Geneva, Ohio, and a grandchild. The body is at the Warner-Pumphrey Funeral Home, 8434 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring. Services will be conducted today at 10 a.m. in the Northwest Presbyterian Church, Silver Spring, and will be brought here to Sunset Memorial Park for interment about 1 p.m. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to the Heart Fund.     The obituary, which appeared in the Cumberland Evening Times on September 9, 1961, does not mention a wife or children, but does list a large family of brothers and sisters. He had been admitted to the hospital the evening before his death. Marjorie is listed as the wife of Clifford Bevan, Jr. in her father's obituary, but I could find no other Clifford Bevan or Bevans mentioned in the news.

Born Feb. 14, 1924, in Shaft, he was the son of the late George H. and Catherine (Long) Layman. He also was preceded in death by two brothers, Raymond L. Layman and Paul L. Layman; and a sister, Virginia Layman Dawson. Mr. Layman was a retired Road Foreman for the Maryland State Highway Administration. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II having served in the South Pacific. He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council #1442, Loyal Order of Moose #348, Old Rail Post V.F.W. #6025, Mount Savage, and Farrady Post #24 American Legion where he was a 50-year member, served on the Honor Guard, and twice served as Post Commander. Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Mary Margaret (Bryson) Layman; two sons, Larry Layman and wife, Jackie, Baltimore, and Mike Layman and wife, Michelle, Frostburg; four grandchildren, Jim Layman and Lisa Layman, Baltimore, Lucas Layman and Rose Layman, Frostburg; three sisters, Rosalie Drew, Frostburg, Marjorie Densmore, FL, and Mildred Minnick, DE; a brother, Charles Layman, Baltimore; and numerous nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at the Durst Funeral Home, P.A., 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Frostburg, on Wednesday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Fr. Paul Byrnes as Celebrant. Interment will be in the St. Michael's Parish Cemetery, Frostburg. Members of the American Legion Honor Guard will serve as pallbearers. Services will be conducted on Thursday at 8 p.m. in the Miller Funeral Home, Baltimore. The body will be cremated. Layman of Cumberland, nephews Jason Layman and wife Tonya and Justin Layman and wife Maria, and cousins, Shirley Page of Lonaconing, Norman Jean Keith of Alabama and Joseph Rowan of Lonaconing and special friend Mary Shade. There will be a graveside service on Wednesday, January 14, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at Frostburg Memorial Park with the Rev. Jim Jeffries officiating.
