Grantsville, Oct. 12 - Services were held this afternoon in New Germany Methodist church for Henry Stewart Crowe, 85, who died Tuesday evening at his home in Avilton after a long illness. The Rev. Charles Sisk officiated. Mr. Crowe was the last member of a family of nine children of Henry and Hariette (Durst) Crowe, early settlers in New Germany. He is survived by his widow, three daughters, Mrs. Mary Wilhelm and Mrs. Pearl Wilhelm, Avilton; and Mrs. Hazel Garlitz, Cumberland; and four sons, Harvey, who just returned from Germany; Samuel, Lee and Edgar, at home. FROSTBURG — Samuel Webster Crowe, 70, owner of Hilton Florist, died yesterday at Sacred Heart Hospital where he had been a patient two weeks. He had been in ill health one year. He resided at Avilton. A native of New Germany, he was a son of the late Henry S. and Louvina (Duckworth) Crowe. Mr. Crowe was a retired grader operator for the Garrett County Roads Department. Surviving are his widow, Melva (Broadwater) Crowe; three sons, Milton L. Crowe, Cumberland; Hubert J. Crowe, at home, and Owen L. Crowe, Frostburg; three daughters, Mrs. Roy D. Broadwater and Mrs. Harold B. Morris, both of Avilton, and Mrs. Forrest Broadwater, Salisbury, Pa.; three brothers, Lee, Edgar and Harvey Crowe, all of Avilton; two sisters, Mrs. Leonard Wilhelm, Avilton; and Mrs. Earl Garlitz, Star Route, Frostburg, and 16 grandchildren. The body is at the Hafer Frost Mansion Funeral Home where friends will be received today from 7 to 9 p. m. and tomorrow from 2 to 4 p. m. and 7 to 9 p. m. Services will be conducted there Wednesday at 2 p. m. by Rev. Robert Moxley, pastor of Zion United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Trinity Methodist Cemetery, New Germany. AVILTON — Harvey H. Crowe, 67, died on Tuesday in Meyersdale Community Hospital. A native of New Germany, he was a son of the late Stewart and Louvinia (Duckworth) Crowe. He is survived by two brothers, Edgar and Lee Crowe, both of Avilton, and two sisters, Mrs. Hazel Garlitz and Mrs. Mary Wilhelm, also of Avilton. Mr. Crowe was a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church and was a veteran of World War II. Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Home in Grantsville today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. A service will be held on Friday at 2 p.m. in the funeral home with Rev. He retired after 34 years of service from the Cumberland Coca-Cola Bottling Company, where he was a warehouse manager. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving as a sergeant in the Engineer Corps. He was a member of the NRA, a life member of DAV, a lifetime member of the North American Hunting Club, and the Fort Hill Rifle and Pistol Club. Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Sandra Lee (Twigg) Crowe; one daughter, Shelly Lee Cox, Newark, Del.; two sons, Danny Lee Crowe, Middletown, Del., and Deane Lee Crowe, Cumberland; five grandchildren; and three sisters, Diona Broadwater, Avilton, Arlene Morris, New Smyrna Beach, Fla., and Helen Broadwater, Salisbury, Pa. She was very active and held various offices in the United Methodist Women, youth group counselor, treasurer of Sunday School, helped with Vacation Bible School, sang in the choir, served on numerous church committees, and was always eager to help prepare and donate food for church functions. She always encouraged people, especially young people, to attend church, and she would gather up car loads of family and friends to bring them to church. Also, she was a member of the Northern Garrett Republican Women, where she served as Vice-President for many years, helped cook countless meals for family get-togethers and special events at the Wilhelm Recreation Area. She was the oldest of nineteen children and had an inner strength that surpassed any challenge she encountered, even to the end of her life. Her life was an example of love and sacrifice which was demonstrated by her devotion to her loving husband, the wisdom and love taught and given to her adoring children, and the fascination she had for her doting grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. One could always hear her whistling while she was working. She was always ready to give a helping hand and share her delicious food, home-canned items, and baked goods. Twila Mae always put others first. Friends will be received at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, 16864 National Pike, Frostburg, MD, on Sunday, August 31, 2014 from 2-4 & 6-9 pm. In addition, he is survived by fourteen siblings including Ronald Wilhelm, Ray Wilhelm, Gilbert Wilhelm, Robert Wilhelm, Twila Mae Fike, Susie Kamp, and Mildred Husselbaugh, all of Avilton, Olin Wilhelm, of Ohio, Dallas Wilhelm, of Barton, Jean Miller, of Ohio, Lois Rowe, of Frostburg, Connie Burdock, of Frostburg, Helen Michael, of Westernport, and Sheila Baker, of Finzel. In addition to his Savior, he will be joining in Heaven his father, Leonard Wilhelm Sr.; mother, Mary (Crowe) Wilhelm, and his brothers and sisters Harry Wilhelm, Dale Wilhelm, Hazel Layman, and Okey Wilhelm. Junior was best known for his sense of humor, hard working spirit, and the love he had for his family. He was a logger and farmer by trade, and was happiest when he was in the field on his tractor, singing at the top of his lungs. He took pride in raising fat cattle, (including his prized bull, Snoopy), big pumpkins, and loving kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids. He enjoyed picking apples, fruit, berries, and walking through the garden to see what he could find. He looked forward to plowing his fields in the spring, picking the first sweet corn in the summer, “deer camp” at the barn in the fall, and Christmas Eve with his family in the winter. He and his wife, “Curly” were married on March 5, 1955. Throughout their 55 year journey together, they built a loving home and were best friends and constant companions. They enjoyed going for rides on Sundays, watching the Pirates on TV, dancing the jig at the Flat, and spending time together at their home. Junior never missed a birthday party, and looked forward to spending Sunday nights at home with his family and fishing with his boys. He was “Pap” to everyone, and kids were always drawn to his sense of humor and cheerfulness. Although he will be sadly missed, his family will find peace and comfort in all of the happy memories and loving times they were so fortunate to share with him. Dale Frederick Wilhelm, infant son of Leonard and Mary Elizabeth (Crowe) Wilhelm, died at the home of his parents at Avilton about 9:45 o'clock Tuesday evening, Nov. 19. The baby was only three months old. Bronchial pneumonia was given as the cause of his death. He had been ill for several days and when his condition became critical Rev. Virgil R. Gillum, pastor of the Grantsville Methodist Church, was summoned to baptize him. Besides his parents, the child is survived by four brothers and six sisters. Funeral services were held at the Mt. Gilbert Donald Wilhelm Sr.,76, of Lancaster Hill Road, Lonaconing, died Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2017, at Frostburg Village Nursing Home. Born on Aug. 27, 1941, at home, he was the son of the late Leonard Wilhelm Sr. and Mary (Crowe) Wilhelm. He was one of 19 children. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Hazel Layman and Twila Mae Fike; and five brothers, Leonard Jr., Harry, Dale, Okey and Bobby. Gilbert grew up in Avilton, working on the family farm. He attended Valley High School. A heavy equipment operator, he worked for multiple construction and coal companies. In his 20s and 30s, he worked with brothers during the Vietnam Conflict for Harwell Construction Company in Buckhannon, W.Va., AP Hill, Va., Indian Town Gap, Pa., Fort Belvoir, Va., and Upper Marlboro. He also worked for Moran Coal Company and Savage River Diary Farms. He was the proud partner of Wilhelm Coal Co., GB Liquors, M+M Loggers and BB+G Logging. He was also a landlord for a rental property. He enjoyed farming and operating equipment. Cutting timber was his favorite activity. He very much loved his family, and he enjoyed working with them. Appearance meant a lot to him. It was important and enjoyable for him to keep the grass cut at home and at Wilhelm Flat. He was a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church. He was also a member of Lonaconing Republican Club. Robert “Bobby” Loye Wilhelm, 69, of Lancaster Hill Road, Lonaconing died Tuesday, November 24, 2015 at Western Maryland Regional Medical Center, Cumberland. Born on March 2, 1946 he was the son of the late Leonard Wilhelm, Sr. and Mary (Crowe) Wilhelm. He was preceded in death by two sisters Hazel Layman, Twila Mae Fike and four brothers, Leonard, Jr., Harry, Dale and Okey. Bobby was a 1964 graduate of Valley High School and attended Wesleyan college in Buckhannon, WV. He was a self-employed logger. He loved life and was well known for his great cooking and took pride in it. He enjoyed wood working and played many instruments, he especially enjoyed playing the organ and the accordion. He was a jack of all trades. He was very proud of his children. FROSTBURG - Beatrice Colleen Opel, 91, of Frostburg, and formerly of Longstretch, died Friday, April 05, 2019, at Goodwill Mennonite Home, Grantsville. Born Nov. 14, 1927, in Garrett Co., she was the daughter of the late Julius and Pearl (Crowe) Wilhelm. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Earl Edward Opel; one sister, Agnes Carey; one half-brother, Lester Hunter; one granddaughter, Candy Sue Opel; and one great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Magruder. Beatrice and her husband, Earl, owned and operated The Long Stretch Market. She was a member of the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, a Church Board Member, and the Homemaker's Club. She was a lifetime member of the Eastern Garrett Co. Firemen's Ladies Auxiliary. She loved spending her summer months in Garrett Co. and wintertime in New Smyrna Beach, Fla., where she volunteered many hours at the Fish Memorial Hospital Auxiliary's "Pink Door." She is survived by three sons, Dale (Rose) Opel, David (Dottie) Opel and Bruce Opel; six grandchildren, Jesse (Lisa) Opel, Lori (Jimmy) Magruder, David (Brandi) Opel, Brandon Opel, Jason Opel and Justin Opel; nine great-grandchildren, Emily and Alexis Opel, Madilynn and Molly Magruder, Tiffany, Devon and Drew Opel, Adalyn and Kyra Opel. Agnes Marie (Wilhelm) Carey, 86, of Frostburg, passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, Aug. 5, 2016. Born Nov. 18, 1929, in Avilton, to Julius and Pearl (Crowe) Wilhelm. She is preceded in death by her parents and sons, Douglas Carey and Roger Carey. Mrs. Carey was a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church and Ladies Aid, a lifetime member of Eastern Garrett Volunteer Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary and a member of the Farm Bureau. She was the senior center manager for Garrett County Office for Aging with 12 years of service. Agnes worked after graduation in Ohio Woolworth's Diner and became assistant manager, moving home in 1949 and married James. She was a homemaker well-known for her great cooking and baking. Agnes was a dedicated community volunteer all her life at church and Eastern Garrett Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary putting endless hours in support. She loved her country life living and working on the farm, gardening, canning and cooking. She and James loved dancing together and also loved bowling as hobbies. Surviving is her husband of 66 years, James A. Carey; children, Julius Carey and wife, Karmen, Susan Carey-Powell and husband, Billy, Darin Carey and Carrie Shaffer; grandchildren, Christopher Carey, Anthony Carey, Shanna Powell, Jesse Powell, Sadie Powell, Lydia Powell, Ethan Carey, Darius Carey and Harley Shaffer; four great-granddaughters and one-great grandson; a sister, Beatrice Opel and half-brother, Lester Hunter; and numerous nieces and nephews. Services for Bonnie Lee Broadwater, eight-year-old Avilton girl who was fatally injured yesterday afternoon when she was struck by an automobile on U. S. Route 40, six miles west of Frostburg, will be held Thursday at 3:30 p. m. at Mt. Zion Methodist Church, located on Route 40. Rev. Emory McGraw, pastor, will officiate and interment will be in the church cemetery. The body will be taken from the Durst Funeral Home in Frostburg to the home of the girl's grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Crowe, in Avilton, sometime this evening. The Garrett County youngster who lived at Avilton, was pronounced dead on arrival at Miners Hospital in Frostburg. Dr. James E. Feaster Jr., deputy Garrett County medical examiner, said the victim died of a fractured skull. She was a daughter of Roy and Diona (Crowe) Broadwater. Authorities said the driver of the automobile was Mavis Irene Warren, 32, of 5212 Valley Road, Washington 19, D. C. The accident occurred at 4 p. m. at Long Stretch in front of the Route 40 Elementary School. The child was reported to have gone to the school earlier in the day to take a band lesson. Afterward she and several other children were standing in front of the school waiting for a ride home. Tfc. Glen D. Folk of the State Police said the driver was operating her car east on Route 40 at an apparent moderate rate of speed. As the car came abreast of the child, police said, the victim began crossing the highway and was struck by the right front fender of the auto. The child was thrown off to the right of the highway. A native of Avilton, the little girl was born on February 15, 1951, and was a member of Mt. Zion Methodist Church. Surviving, besides her parents are two brothers, Monty Roy and Rickey Wayne Broadwater, both at home, and three sisters, Barbara Diane, Gladys Louis and Denise June Broadwater also at home. Leonard Joseph "Joe" Wilhelm III, 60, of Avilton, went to be with the Lord on his birthday, Tuesday, April 18, 2017, at Western Maryland Regional Medical Center, Cumberland. Joe was born on April 18, 1957, in Frostburg, he was the son of Nancy "Curly" (Caton) Wilhelm, Avilton, and the late Leonard "Junior" Wilhelm. He was a 1975 graduate of Northern High School, where he played football for the Northern Huskies. He married the love of his life, Shari (Greene) in Aug. 25, 1979. Joe was a logger, by trade, and spent most of his life working on the family farm. He started going to the woods with his dad when he was very young and worked alongside his brother, Steve, almost all of his life. He loved cutting the big trees and rarely took a day off. He was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers, Penguins and Pirates fan, and could often be found cheering on his team with his wife, Shari. He looked forward to deer season each year, when he took what was often his only vacation of the year. Joe never hesitated to help a friend or neighbor in need. His grandchildren meant the world to him and he never missed the chance to spend time with them. Though they are young, they will never forget lasting impressions of their "Pappy Joe" left on their hearts. Along with his wife and mother, Joe is also survived by three children, Leonard "Joey" Wilhelm IV and wife, Erica (Wilt), and their children, Owen and Ava, Avilton, Jed Wilhelm and wife, Kristie (Hensel), and their children, Braelyn and Ben, Cresaptown, and Lacey Wilhelm and special friend, Josh Kelbaugh, Centreville; one sister, Angela (Wilhelm) Garlitz and special friend, Roger McKenzie; one brother, Steve Wilhelm and wife, Terri (Lawson); as well as many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins who will never forget the time they spent with Joe. Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., 179 Miller St., Grantsville, on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Services will be conducted in the funeral home on Friday, April 21, 2017, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. GRANTSVILLE — Mervin Leroy Kamp, 51, of Grantsville, died Saturday, Nov. 15, 2014, at his home. Born July 14, 1963, in Cumberland, he was the son of Gale and Susie (Wilhelm) Kamp, Avilton. Mervin was employed at Hill Top Fruit Market, Grantsville. In addtion to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Peggy J. (McFarland) Kamp; one son, Jason Kamp and wife, Tinsa, Grantsville; two grandchildren, Cara and Liam Kamp; five brothers, Gregg Kamp and wife, Joyce, Perry Kamp and wife, Kathy, Galen Kamp and wife, Karlinda, Kelby Kamp and wife, Stephanie and Darrin Kamp, all of Avilton; two sisters, Victoria Hordubay and husband, Elmer, Pocahontas, Pa., Brenda Jones and husband, Jerry, Avilton. He adored his grandchildren and enjoyed their visits. Mervin liked helping others, gardening and working in his yard and, of course, his pride and joy was his John Deere tractor. FROSTBURG - Douglas James Carey, 18, Star Route, died Tuesday at Sacred Heart Hospital of injuries he sustained when he fell from a moving car Monday night. He was a son of James and Agnes (Wilhelm) Carey of Star Route. Surviving, in addition to his parents, are two brothers, Julius and Darin, and a sister, Susan, all at home, and his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Wilhelm, RD 1, Frostburg. A 1969 graduate of Northern High School at Accident, Carey participated in football and wrestling. He was given honorable mention by the Tri-Valley Conference in football and won second place in District 1 wrestling competition. He was a member of the Lettermen's Club and Mt.
