While Judge Boyd was hearing the appeal docket this afternoon, Judge Henderson heard a habeas corpus case in his office. It was the case of a divorced wife trying to get possession of her two boys, aged 10 [Noah] and 12 years [Frank], from the divorced husband and father. In many respects it was one of the most remarkable habeas corpus cases heard in this court. The woman, Julia Winebrenner now lives at Mt. Savage, and the man, Frank Winebrenner, at Borden Shaft. The latter alleged that the woman left his home with his brother and was now living with him. Winebrenner produced a number of witnesses who testified to his good character in every particular. The wife took the stand and made it appear that her former husband was the meanest man that ever lived. She said that he laid around with another woman, refused to give her any money or to provide for the children, locking his money up and keeping it until she estimated that he must have thousands hoarded away. She averred that none of her children were born under the Winebrenner roof for reasons which she gave. Winebrenner had witnesses who testified that the third child [Olin] born to Mrs. Winebrenner had all the characteristics of a negro child, that she got drunk and cursed like a trooper. Mrs. Winebrenner swore that Winebrenner knocked her down and would stand over her with knives and sometimes with a gun. Winebrenner's witnesses testified that they never knew him to get drunk. The two boys swore that their father was good to them and that they wanted to live with him. The testimony, however, was conclusive that Mr. Winebrenner (aside from his former wife's opinion) was a decent man and the court remanded back the children to his care and keeping. Mr. P. C. Frostburg, December 29 - James Winebrenner, 75, of Long Stretch, Garrett county, west of Frostburg, died last night at Miners' Hospital here after being admitted earlier in the evening. He was a retired farmer and had been in ill health for a long period. Mr. Winebrenner was a member of Mt. Zion Methodist church, Garrett county. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Laura (Layton) Winebrenner, eight sons and three daughters: Howard, James, Roy, Harry, Clayton, Grant, Francis, and Leonard Winebrenner, Mrs. Alice Hetz, Mrs. Myrtle Wade, and Miss Nellie Winebrenner, all residents of this section. Services will be held Monday at 2:30 p. m. at the home, with the Rev. Raymond Crowe, pastor of Midland circuit, officiating, interment will be in Mt. Zion cemetery, Garrett county. James Winebrenner, 75, retired farmer of Garrett County, Maryland on Route 1, Salisbury, died at his home at 12:20 p.m., on Saturday, December 29, of a complication of diseases. He had been in failing health for some time, and when he contracted the flu the same week, lived but a few days. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Laura (Layton) Winebrenner, and eight sons and three daughters - Howard, James, Roy, Harry, Clayton, Francis and Leonard, and Mrs. Alice Hetz, Mrs. Myrtle Wade and Nellie, all residing nearby in Garrett County. Funeral services were conducted at his home at 2:30 p.m., on Monday, December 31, with the Rev. Ray Crowe, pastor of the Midland, Md., Methodist Church officiating. Interment in the Mt. A 50th anniversary party was given for Mr. and Mrs. Harry Winebrenner, RD 2, Box 591, Frostburg, by their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Garlitz. It was held November 11 at St. Mary's hall, Pocahontas, Pa. Mrs. Winebrenner is the daughter of the late Peter and Clara (McKenzie) Caton. Mr. Winebrenner is the son of the late Jamees and Laura (Layton) Winebrenner. Both Mr. and Mrs. Winebrenner are life long residents of Garrett County. They are the parents of one child, Mrs. Kathleen Garlitz; and have three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Mr. Winebrenner is a retired clay miner for Kaiser Refractories Corporation of Zihlman. FINZEL - Earl Adam 'Slim' Eisler, 86, of 77 Sampson Rock Road, Frostburg, went home with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, April 18, 2004. He died at home surrounded by people who loved him. Born in Finzel, on March 23, 1918, he was the youngest child of the late John Adam and Hylie (Winebrenner) Clark Eisler. He was also preceded in death by seven sisters; 10 brothers; and one granddaughter. He got his first job at the age of nine hauling rocks to clear the way for the building of the Finzel Road. When he got older, he worked in the coal mines and later for his sister Elsie Lotz at Frostburg Meats. For years he sold Rawleigh Products door-to-door. He eventually became an employee of the Celanese Amcelle Plant and was retired from there. Dad, Pappap, Pappy enjoyed fishing, hunting, watching baseball games, and working crypto quotes, but his passion was bluegrass music. At the age of eight he began teaching himself how to play various instruments including the piano, harmonica, guitar, banjo, and mandolin but he became 'master of the fiddle.' He played entirely by ear and it was said by more than one person that no one could play the 'Orange Blossom Special' like he did. He won several fiddling contests and even judged a few. Being 6'3" and slender earned him the knick name 'Mountain City Slim' and over the years he played in several bands including The Mountain City Ramblers, Dusty Shaver's Gospel Singers and Appalachian Bluegrass to name a few. In the early years he played for round and square dances all around the area and could be heard on live radio broadcasts. In the later years he entertained children at the Outdoor School in Pleasant Valley and played at several nursing homes and churches, he also performed for the Governor at Rocky Gap State Park. He wrote, sang, and played the fiddle on an original song called 'Garrett County Home' in tribute to the place where he lived his entire life. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was quite witty. He also created and performed a comedy routine in which he portrayed a character he called 'Zookie'. His talents were limitless. He cut down the trees and built his own home. He loved to work with his hands and he called it 'tinkering around'. He was extremely creative and truly could make something out of nothing. He worked on everything from broken handles to lawn mowers and his skills at mending were summed up by his grandchildren, when as one stood crying over a broken toy, her brother comforted her by saying, 'Don't cry, Pappap can fix anything.' And it was a rare occurrence when he couldn't. He is survived by three loving daughters, Helen Pauline 'Pommy' Keister and husband Bob, Oldtown, E. Loretta 'Letty' Minnick and husband Bob, Finzel, and Eileen Frances 'Leenie' Ewing and husband Kenny with whom he resided; a special granddaughter, Missy Ramhoff, whom he helped to raise; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; faithful companion and wonderful friend 'Alda' with whom he shared many memories; several nieces and nephews; and his former wife Helen (Minnick) Brode and her son, a special friend Raymond 'Butch' Brode. Earl's friends number too many to count. They visited and called to inquire about him, sent cards, and kept him in their prayers. He was also blessed to receive care and comfort from the Garrett Co. Home Health Care Team and Hospice of Garrett Co. They became quite a part of his life and he looked forward to their visits. Friends and family will be received at the Durst Funeral Home, P.A., 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at the Emmanuel United Methodist Church, Pocahontas Road, of which he was a member, on Wednesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Dan Agnew officiating. His body will be taken to the church one hour prior to the services. Interment will be in the Emmanuel Methodist Cemetery. A native of Finzel, Clark was the husband of the late Mrs. Agnes (Burdock) Clark. He was employed as a fireclay miner and was a member of Frostburg Lodge 348 LOOM. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. William O. Twigg and Mrs. Francis Malloy, both of Frostburg; one sister, Mrs. Lloyd Klink, Frostburg; three half-sisters, Mrs. Elsie Lotz, Frostburg; Mrs. Nellie Shroyer, Winchester Bridge, and Mrs. Anna Crowe, Baltimore; two brothers, Charles, Barton, and Frank, Jenners, Pa.; two half-brothers, Samuel and Earl Clark, both of Frostburg, and four grandchildren. Services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Johnson Methodist Church, with Rev. J. B. Jones, pastor of the First Methodist Church of Frostburg, officiating. MEYERSDALE, Nov. 12—When young Johnny Troutman and pretty Evelyn Marie Winebrenner said "I do' before the preacher Monday, Ma Troutman shed none of the usual tears and Pa Winebrenner had no fatherly lump in his throat. That's because Ma Troutman, a widow, and Pa Winebrenner, a widower, up and got married, too. And off went the two happy couples to the elder bride's farm near Sand Patch, for their honeymoon.

The likes of that wedding he had never seen, declared Rev. Edgar W. Beckett, of Frostburg, Md., who performed the ceremony. Officials who issue marriage licenses at the Allegany county courthouse at Cumberland, Md., were astounded, too.

For what happened, you see, is that the young groom's mother and the young bride's father had joined their children in a double wedding. It all began when John Edward Troutman, 25, started coming over the mountain from Sand Patch to Frostburg to court Evelyn Marie. As the romance began to flower, Mrs. Cecelia Agnes Troutman naturally got acquainted with her son's sweetheart. Just as naturally, she also got acquainted with Evelyn Marie's father, Roy Raymond Winebrenner, 43, of Frostburg, worker at the brickyard of the Big Savage Refactories Corporation.

Mrs. Troutman was the widow of Amos Troutman, who died in August, 1937. Mr. Winebrenner's wife, the former Bess Porter, had died in January. So young love and middle-aged love flourished side by side, and Monday the double-knot was tied.

Thereby, Mr. Winebrenner acquired a wife, a step-son, a son-in-law, and step-daughter-in-law. Mrs Troutman, in turn acquired a husband, a step-daughter, a daughter- in-lavv, and a step-son-in-law. Glenn Thomas Austin was born about 1925. He died on 17 Dec 1945 in England. T/5 Glenn Thomas Austin, 21-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Austin of Meyersdale, is reported to have died in England, December 17, "apparent heart failure" being given as the cause of his death. His parents received notice to that effect from the War Department. But due to the fact that they received mail from him, sent from Southampton, England, December 17, the date of his reported death, and also because they received notice that he was promoted from Private First Class to T/5 after that date, the family were inclined to believe that the report of his death was erroneous. However, they have not received any further word from him since receipt of that postmarked Southampton, England, Dec. 17, so they have finally been forced to the conclusion that he died on the same day that he dispatched the last mail they received from him. The family had been looking forward to his return from overseas for the last few months, but have now abandoned all hope that they will ever see him again. The sad news has been a great shock to them. Glenn entered military service at the age of 18 and had been overseas 20 months, most of the time in England. FROSTBURG — Bernard Samuel Eisler, 79, of Frostburg, formerly of Finzel, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 27, 2010, surrounded by his loving family, at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center, Cumberland, following a courageous and difficult battle with cancer. On Nov. 5, 1930, he was born in the beautiful mountains of Garrett County; a place he was proud to call home. Bernard was honored to be the son of the late Samuel and Grace (Arnold) Eisler. He was also preceded in death by his cherished sister, Evelyn Eisler; and foster brother and comrade, Robert “Bob” Smith. Mr. Eisler was a 1947 graduate of Grantsville High School, Grantsville. He was proud to be the opening general manager at the Chestnut Ridge Gulf and Liquor Store, Grantsville, where he continued to manage and operate until his retirement in 1988. Previously he was the general manager of the Garrett County Liquor Store, Main St., Grantsville. He was a retired member of the Eastern Garrett Volunteer Fire Company, where he was presented Fireman of the Year in 1983.
Surviving, to continue to keep his love flowing, is “the love of his life”, his wife of 34 years, Colleen E. Brodie; and his valued and only son, Rick Eisler, Fredericksburg, Va. He was also rewarded with his two treasured “daughters”, Alana (Brodie) Nicol and husband Wayne “Nick”, LaVale, and his devoted “Baby”, Londa (Brodie) Walker and husband Marty of Frostburg; three grandchildren, that were all his precious, pride and joy, his oldest grandson, Adam Nicol and wife Kathy of Cresaptown, his priceless and adoring granddaughter, his “Sweetie”, Bridget Troutman and fiancé, Jerimie Diehl, of Ellerslie, his youngest grandson and “Buddy”, David Walker at home; and two very special great-grandsons, Codi Nicol and Atticus Nicol, Cresaptown; and a very special cousin, which he loved like a little sister, Eileen Ewing, her husband, Kenny, and her daughter, Missy, all of Finzel; his very, very special and adoring grand ”pug”, Stanley, also of Frostburg; and many other cousins, relatives and close friends. Harold was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U. S. Navy. Following his discharge, he worked on the assembly line at Kelly Springfield Tire Company. He was an honorary lifetime member of Farrady Post 24 American Legion in Frostburg and VFW Henry Hart Post 1411 in Cumberland. Pauline was born on May 7, 1936, in Finzel, to Helen A. Brode and the late Earl Adam Eisler. Pauline was a 1954 graduate of Beall High School; was formerly employed by Berkowitz in Frostburg, and the old Sacred Heart Hospital on Decatur Street in Cumberland. Pauline was a marvelous homemaker who loved to cook and can. She enjoyed having a house full of children. She was a loving, wonderful wife, the world’s best mother and a faithful friend. Her barbecued chicken was without compare. Bob and Pauline’s home was a gathering place for family, friends and anyone who happened by. She loved everyone unconditionally and generously gave of herself to everyone. Being with Pauline meant being loved, comforted and fed. Her beautiful smile and gentle laugh made many a sad heart glad. Crocheting and crossword puzzles were two of her favorite activities. She made beautiful crocheted snowflakes that to this day still decorate many Christmas trees. Pauline will be sadly missed and remembered lovingly by her community and many friends. She also leaves to miss her fifteen grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews that she loved with all her heart. Born Oct. 23, 1931 in Finzel, he was the son of the late John and Agnes (Burdock) Clark. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by two brothers, Carl (Jake) Clark and Lawrence Clark; one sister, Leona Twigg.
