George Frank McKenzie, 80, of 122 Mullin Street, died Tuesday in Memorial Hospital. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Mildred (Cunningham) McKenzie. Born here Oct. 6, 1902, he was a son of the late Milnor J. McKenzie and Frances (Maloney) McKenzie. Mr. McKenzie was a retired house painter and a former Celanese employee. He was a veteran of Army service and was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Also surviving are two sons, George E. McKenzie, Buena Park, Calif.; Joseph J. McKenzie, Chardon, Ohio; a grandson whom he reared, James T. McKenzie, at home; five daughters, Mrs. Mary Jo Growden, Mrs. Dorothy Thrasher and Mrs. Rita Markley, all of Cumberland; Mrs. Virginia Crews, Mentor-on-the-Lake, Ohio; Mrs. Sue Atkins, Painesville, Ohio; two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Miltenberger and Mrs. Catherine Koontz, both of LaVale; 29 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Friday at 9 a m. in St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Pallbearers will be James T. McKenzie, Joseph J. McKenzie, Robert D. McKenzie, James R. Markley, Richard M. Greenwalt, and Ronald A. Thrasher. CUMBERLAND - Mary Jo Growden, 90, of Cumberland, passed away Tuesday, April 17, 2018, at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center with her grandchildren by her side. Born Oct. 17, 1927, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late George Frank McKenzie and Mildred Agnes (Cunningham) McKenzie. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her loving husband of nearly 50 years, Carl Elliott Growden; sons, John Frederick Growden and Thomas Michael Growden; brother, James McKenzie; and sister, Dorothy M. Thrasher. Mary Jo was a 1946 graduate of St. Mary's High School, faithful and devout member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, volunteer at St. Mary's Elementary School cafeteria, Cub Scouts Den Mother, and a volunteer with the Telephone Pioneers of America. She was a member of the Cumberland Moose, the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion, the Goodfellowship Club, the Democrat Club, and the VFW. Mary Jo worked at GC Murphy's, Packy's Bakery, and sold Jafra cosmetics, but she made her career as a homemaker and taking care of others. Her kitchen was the hub of her home and the family meeting place where many memories were made and the very best meals were shared. In her kitchen, Aunt Jobie did all her favorite things: canning, cooking, baking, talking and laughing on the phone, making candy, playing cards and games, painting, reading, and completing crosswords and the cryptograms (celebrity cipher) in the daily newspaper. If she wasn't in the kitchen, she was out taking care of others, doing God's work, or enjoying nature. She enjoyed camping, fishing, traveling, or just being in her yard chatting with neighbors. She is survived by sisters, Virginia L. Crews, Ohio, Rita F. Markley, Cumberland, and Sue A. Atkins and husband, Bob, Ohio; two brothers, George E. McKenzie and wife, Shirley, Buena Park, Calif., and Joseph J. McKenzie and wife, Betty, Ohio; two grandchildren and their spouses, who were the light in her eyes, Stephanie (Growden) Lewis and husband, Trevor, Oakland, and Matthew Growden and wife Gwen, of Cumberland; two great-grandsons who brought her joy beyond measure, Camden Thomas Lewis and Greyson Elliott Growden; as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins, and others who loved and adored her too numerous to mention. Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, on Friday, April 20, 2018. A Christian Wake service will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday at 7:45 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary's Catholic Church on Saturday, April 21, 2018, at 10 a.m. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park. CUMBERLAND - Dorothy Mae (McKenzie) Thrasher, 83, of Cumberland, passed away on Wednesday, May 21, 2014 at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center. Born July 21, 1930, she was the daughter of the late George “Frank” and Mildred “Mil” (Cunningham) McKenzie. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul L. Thrasher, Jr.; a son, Marshall E. “Ed” Thrasher; and a brother, James “Jim” McKenzie. Dottie graduated from St. Mary High School in Cumberland in 1948. She always talked about her senior class trip to New York City. While her children were in school, Dottie was very active in the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts and the PTA at Pennsylvania Avenue and Johnson Heights Schools. She was an active member of the Tri State Citizens Band Radio Club. Dottie and her husband Paul were active campers, and she delivered Meals on Wheels for several years. Dottie later moved in the Kensington Algonquin where she participated in many of the activities. She completed her bucket list by taking a helicopter ride in Hagerstown arranged by the Kensington Algonquin in 2012. Dottie never met a person she didn't like. She loved being around people and making them laugh. She was an avid Bingo player. She loved to dress up in costumes for holidays and special events. She was still doing backflips and headstands with her grandchildren when she was in her fifties. Dottie was loved by her family and all who met her and will be sadly missed. She is survived by her daughters, Paula Horn and husband Dick, Fort Ashby, and Barbara Hahn and husband Rick, Cumberland; a son, Ronald Thrasher and wife Lori, Cumberland; granddaughters, Lori Horn Stark and husband Eric, Bethel Park, Pa., Leslie Horn White and husband Darren, Cary North Carolina, Michel Hahn Diehl and husband Craig, Cumberland, Jessica Thrasher Matlick and husband Dan, Edgewater, Md., and Julia Thrasher, Cumberland; grandsons, Jason Thrasher, Oklahoma, Joshua Thrasher and Justin Thrasher, both of Cumberland. MENTOR, Ohio — Virginia 'Ginny' Lee Crews, 89, of Mentor, passed away Monday, April 26, 2021, at home surrounded by those she loved. Ginny was born Feb. 22, 1932, in Cumberland, to the late Frank and Mildred McKenzie. She married her next-door neighbor and sweetheart, Harold Emerson Crews, in October 1950. In 1955 they moved to Ohio. She worked as a teacher's aide at Broadmoor School in Mentor for 27 years. For many years, she also managed the Deepwood Bowling League, enriching the lives of developmentally disabled adults in the area. Ginny enjoyed spending time with her large, extended family and loved to celebrate family events such as picnics and campouts. Throughout her life, she made frequent trips to Cumberland with her family to visit her many relatives there. She was a long-time member of Saint Bede Catholic Community and a devout Catholic. She will always be remembered for her complete dedication to family and her love of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Survivors include her children, Martin (Patricia) Crews, Denny (Sue) Crews, Larry (Kim) Crews, and Cheryl Crews; grandchildren, Leigh Ann (Tom Jr.) Sturniolo, Dan (Paula) Crews, Kevin (Kris) Crews, Crystal Crews, Jeremy (Minda) Merchak, Melissa Merchak, Hannah Crews, Kelly (James) Randall, Amy Crews, Kristy Crews, Anthony (Autumn) Crews; great-grandchildren, Sammy, Katie, Nicky, Collin, Miles, Nyla, Cameron, Tyler, Piper, Brandon, Matthew, Tia, Nena, and Juniper. James Robert McKenzie, 28, of 122 Mullin Street, was found dead about 3:45 a.m. yesterday at the City Jail. Mr. McKenzie, who was picked up in an intoxicated condition for protective custody about 12:10 p.m. Saturday, was found dead by Police Officer Thomas Mayo about 3:45 a.m. yesterday. Dr. Benedict Skitarelic, deputy county medical examiner, attributed Mr. McKenzie's death to aspiration of stomach contents. He apparently had vomited in the jail and fell to the floor in such a position that he inhaled the vomit. The medical examiner estimated that he had been dead between 10 and 12 hours at the time his body was discovered. Mr. McKenzie was born in Cumberland, and was a son of George F. and Mildred A. (Cunningham) McKenzie. A veteran of the Vietnam War, he was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and Cumberland Aerie 245, FO Eagles. Also surviving besides his parents, are his widow, Mary (Coiner) McKenzie; a son, James T. McKenzie, city; two daughters, Christine Ann and Mary Ann McKenzie, both of Whitesville, W. Va.; two brothers, George E., Buena Park, Calif., and Joseph J. McKenzie, Chardon, Ohio; and five sisters, Mrs. Mary Jo Growden, Mrs. Dorothy Thrasher, Mrs. Rita Markley and Mrs. Sue Ann Greenawalt, all of Cumberland, and Mrs. Virginia Crews, Mentor-on-the-Lake, Ohio. The body is at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, where friends will be received today from 7 to 9 p.m. and tomorrow from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated Wednesday at 9 a.m. in St. Mary's Catholic Church.
