My Father Ambrose R. McKenzie told Me,Joseph E.McKenzie, this story in July 1995. We were standing on Wills Creek AVE. in Cumberland,Maryland. Dad was looking down into the little creek just about 100 feet up from 307 Wills Creek AVE, Walter and Catherine McKenzie built this house in 1923. Dad told me
that His Father,Walter, was somewhere in this area when he fell down the bank and injured himself. Walter was ill from that day until he died. Dad said Walter died from liver problems and he always thought that it was because of that fall by the creek.

From Leo Mckenzie, son of Walter Mckenzie. Leo's recollection of the incident is "He Jumped across the stream with armfull of cucumbers".

Walter E. McKenzie never drank whiskey in his life but made his living working in the distillery business. My Father told me that Walter knew everything about distilling whiskey.

On the same day Dad told me about the little house just up the street 305 Wills Creek Ave. from 307 Wills Creek AVE. on the other side. Dad said that during the Civil War it was a Mess hall and the Soldiers that were training at Campabella, this is Latin for "Camp of war" would eat at this house log cabin at that time. Allegany High School now stands on Campabella. The School's nickname is the campers.

From Leo Mckenzie, Son of Walter Mckenzie. Leo said "The mess hall was really the home of "Miss Miller's parents who sold pastry to soldiers when they were training,Shooting 58 Caliber rifles. The trench they laid in to fire their rifles was filled in to extend Allegany High around 1980".

Attached is a list of the old forts with Fort McKenzie that Virgil talks about in his book (page 6).

NAMES, LOCATIONS, & DATE OF ESTABLISHMENT OF FORTS IN WEST VIRGINIA

MAMc cut and pasted the information pertaining to Fort McKenzie:

    -FORT MCKENZIE-
This fort was located on the South Branch of the Potomac. Exact location not known. Probably erected by Captain Robert McKenzie some time prior to the year 1757.

From Sheryl Kelso: July, 2014: CUMBERLAND (AP) — Virgil McKenzie digs the past. The Cresaptown native has spent the past 30 years unearthing remnants of the region's Native American civilization and of settlers who were heading west. With help from family members. Mr. McKenzie began exhuming arrowheads, tools and other Indian artifacts hidden beneath the earth of a Seymour Bottom, W.Va., farm he owned in 1968. Mr. McKenzie said his former home served as an Indian camp through the late 1700s. One of the family's first discoveries there was a bust of an Indian warrior or chief. The facial features are still distinguishable on the reddish clay sculpture, which stands about six inches high. Mr. McKenzie's son, Mark, then only 9, found the bust in a pile of rocks on the property. "I wasn't sure what it was, but I thought it was something valuable," Mark McKenzie said. Over the next four years, Mr. McKenzie found more than 20 arrowheads, several tomahawk heads and tools used to clean animal skins and prepare the pelts used for clothing. His centuries-old discoveries adorn a second-floor room of his Maryland Avenue residence and are detailed in a book he published a few years ago. Three rounded stones sit on his desk. In a prior life, the smooth, egg-size rocks served as ammunition for a leather sling, a common weapon used against other tribes and white settlers. The most bizarre item in his collection is a denture plate chiseled from stone. It follows the curvature of the jawbone and appears to have been worn as a set of dentures. These ersatz teeth gave their wearer a stone edge with which to gnaw food. Mr. McKenzie's collection includes more than American Indian artifacts. Years ago Mr. McKenzie and his wife, Mary, were newlyweds living east of Cumberland. While chopping wood one day McKenzie's ax blade struck a ball from a muzzleloader embedded deep in a tree. He believes the ball to be at least 100 years old. His most recent discovery is what the McKenzies believe may be a button from a British soldier who fought in the Revolutionary War. At first glance he and his son thought they'd found a coin. Mr. McKenzie said the insignia on the button hints it may have decorated the coat of one of King George Ill's men. William L. McKenzie, 19, of 51 East Division Street, Fairgo, was fatally injured yesterday when his car left State Route 28 two miles south of Fort Ashby, W.Va., on a slippery highway. The young man, a girl companion and a group of other young people in another car were on a fishing trip. West Virginia State Police said McKenzie's auto failed to straighten out on a sharp curve. His wheels hit the soft shoulder and the car careened over a bank and into a creek. His friend, Miss Jerry Shank, was only slightly injured and, after treatment at Memorial Hospital, was released. McKenzie was taken to Memorial Hospital here, arriving about 9:45 a.m. but died about 15 minutes later, attendants said. First reports that he had been pinned under the car and drowned were unfounded, Dr. Benedict Skitarelic, medical examiner said. Death was due to a ruptured lung. McKenzie was born here January 5, 1948, a son of William Paul McKenzie and Margaret T. (Flynn) McKenzie. He resided at Fairgo all his life and attended SS. Peter and Paul Parochial School and Allegany High School. He had been working recently for the Yuhascik Contracting Company of Bel Air. Requiem mass for Michael F. McKenzie, 16, of Miltenberger Road, Ridgeley, who drowned Thursday in a farm pond at Seymour Bottom, will be celebrated Monday at 9 a. m. at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Authorities said Michael was in the pond with a neighborhood friend, 12-year-old Michael Smith. The McKenzie boy, who had been floating on a rubber raft, was standing near the bank of the pond, detaching a pillow-like device from the raft, when a breeze caused the raft to float toward deeper water. It was reported the youth tried to retrieve it and stepped into deep water and drowned. The Smith youth made an attempt to save him, but was unsuccessful. Time of the drowning was near 6:30 p. m. and rescue units from Ridgeley Volunteer Fire Department, Cumberland Fire Department and the Cumberland Auxiliary Police recovered the body approximately an hour later. The farm pond, on the property of M. E. Heiskell, is described as being oblong and about 100 feet in length and half as wide. The body was found near the middle of the pond. West Virginia State Police from the Keyser detachment, Cpl. J. R. Potts and Trooper R. L. Johnson, said the McKenzie youth's brothers, Patrick and John, and sister, Mary, were playing near the pond when the drowning occurred. A coroner's jury of six men reported to Justice of the Peace Rozelle Presnell, acting coroner, at an inquest in Ridgeley, Thursday night, that the McKenzie youth died of "accidental drowning." The jury consisted of Donald Walters, foreman, and Donald Jewell, Randolph Lantz Jr., William Schoonover, James E. Weakley and Ronald McFadden. The body is at the George Funeral Home where friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p. m. The rosary will be recited there tomorrow at 8 p. m.
