  1. 1.  James Moses McKenzieJames Moses McKenzie was born about 1796 in Cresaptown, Allegany County, Maryland; died on 10 Jan 1873 in Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland.

    Notes:

Per the research of Col. Gabriel T. MacKenzie James Moses McKenzie and Margaret Agnes Porter McKenzie's tombstones had no lettering on them as they were red soft ferrous rectangular stones and time had obliterated all marking on them when he saw them in 1953 in the old Moses McKenzie Cemetary in Cresaptown, Maryland. A Mr. Sanford Robinette, 114 Winchester Road, Cresaptown showed Col. MacKenzie the above mentioned tombstones. Mr. Robinette is the husband of Lena Grant Robinette, daughter of Joseph F. Grant, deceased 1931, a grandson of James Moses and Margaret.

The (James) Moses McKenzie cemetery is located off McKenzie Tower Road, south of Cresaptown, Maryland. Take the Winchester Road Extension, turn left on McKenzie Tower Road. Go about .8 mile and the cemetery is on the right.

Moses McKenzie was listed in the 1860 Allegany County, Maryland Census as living in Disr=trict 6, page 193. His age was listed as being 65 years old. His wife, Margaret, was still alive and her age was listed as being 55.

They had the following children residing with them: Richard, age 22, Emily, age 19, Elizabeth, age 17, Ann, age 13, Charles, age 10 and Marian, age 3.

From the archives of Col. G.T. Mackenzie (Ret.) comes the following:

"there is a family record filed with the estate and will of the above Moses (James Moses) MacKenzie in the Allegany COunty Courthouse in Cumberland, Maryland where, I. Col. Gabriel T. MacKenzie, U.S. Army, retired, great grandson of the said Moses filed said family record with Moses' will but mistakenly said Daniel, father of Moses, was the son of Daniel instead of correctly stating that (James) Moses was the son of Daniel, son of Gabriel, son of John and Katherine."

Here is an obituary penned after three of his children dies within a close period of time:

It is true that in this world there is joy and gladness, success and prosperity; but, in the midst of all these, trouble and sorrow follow us in all our undertakings, enters every household and drives joy and happiness from every bosom, as the leaf is driven before the wind; a sorrow and sadness which the sunlight of day, throwing its beautiful rays of light upon the earth, smiling upon the mountain tops and making them attractive to the eye, decorating the clouds with a golden hue; clothing the valleys with beauty; and which throws a brightness in the silvery spray of the cooling water brooks and filling earth, air and sky with her ten thousand charms, would fail to remove. The attention, sympathies and efforts of friends all fail to satisfy the troubled heart or calm the heaving bosoms. Such was the case with the family whom I shall now refer to, living near Ocean Mines: Mr. McKenzie, who has recently lost three of his dear children. Less than a year ago they were attacked with diphtheria. Three times since it has raged in the family: the last time only proving fatal to the three children. During the month of August little Willie, aged three years, nine months and ten days, fell a victim to death — passed over Jordan into Glory amid the shouts of the redeemed. Leaning over the battlements of heaven, up the valley of the shadow of death, Willie beheld his sister Louisa, who 24 days later followed him to heaven, aged seventeen years, 0 months and eighteen days. As the gates are thrown open he comes down in his angelic form and shouts: “Glory to God! Sister has come!” They together look over the battlements of heaven, watching for loved ones to come, when eight days after they saw little Allie, aged five years, 0 months and seven days, coming down the valley and crossing the stream of death, coming up to the gates which fly open. They shout with the redeemed, “Hallelujah! Allie is safe at home.” They today no doubt are watching and waiting for father, mother, brothers and sisters, whom we trust shall all meet in Heaven. Louisa was converted at Woodland; lived a Christian; died a very triumphant death, such as all might wish to die. There is no comfort that is real and lasting can be found anywhere else but in Jesus. Let me say in conclusion to the bereaved, trust all in Jesus, and it shall be well in life, death, and throughout eternity. W. HIRST REED

The information set forth for the birthdates of Walter Josiah's children were extracted from the old family Bible of Walter Josiah McKenzie and Allie B. Loar. The information was set forth in an affidavit given by Edna Anna McKenzie on December 2, 1960. The affidavit was obtained by Col. G.T. McKenzie (Ret.) (b. 10 Feb 1892).

Also, Col. G.T. MacKenzie reported that Walter Josiah lost his left arm in a train accident when he was 26 years old.

Kenneth MacKenzie Gassman, great-grandson of Walter Josiah McKenzie, provided the following information to the author in February, 2014:

I've attached a photograph of my great grandfather, Walter Josiah McKenzie, standing at the train station (rather, a platform) at McKenzie MD (near Pinto, Cresaptown, and Cumberland MD). When the railroad was built, it bisected the Mackenzie farm. WJ said that was OK, if they would put a station stop on the farm, and honor it for 99 years (expiring sometime in the 1980s, according to family lore). Hence, there was a McKenzie MD station stop for the railroad! (Ed. note: the photograph is linked to Walter Josiah McKenzie on the McKenzies of Ealy Maryland web site.

My cousin Craig (Colflesh) and I have visited the Mackenzie farm -- stretching from Mackenzie Mountain to Mackenzie Bottom (that's the way it is shown on many maps) -- several times over the past few decades. We are both approaching 70, and we can no longer wield a weed-wacker like we did in the younger days. Fortunately, a Boy Scout troop (or someone) cleaned up the McKenzie cemetery on the farm, and it is accessible easily (when I visited in 1985, it was hidden in the woods . . . today, it is visible from the road). Craig and I most recently (2012) repaired the fence, trimmed some trees, and did some other work.

Walter married Allie B. Loar on 20 Apr 1886 in Allegany County, Maryland. Allie (daughter of Nathan B. Loar and Ellen Morgan) was born on 21 Oct 1867 in Loartown, Maryland; died on 23 May 1949 in Hagerstown, Maryland. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

Col. G.T. MacKenzie started his genealogical research related to the McKenzies/MacKenzies of Maryland in 1929. At the time he started his research, he had access to relatives who were born in the 1840's. He started his U.S. Army career in 1916 and retired as a Colonel in 1951.

Comments (Gabriel Thornton McKenzie b. 10 Feb 1892 Cumberland, Maryland d. Jan 1970 Miami, Florida):

Hi Mike I had a neat thing to tell you about Col. McKenzie. I found that when he went to look at the census, I mean the real books, He made a little check mark by the names he was looking up. I guessing he looked at the books before they were microfilmed. I think it would be neat if you made a note about this on his record. Or maybe this note would do.

Kenneth Gassman sent the following email to the author in March, 2014: One other correction I'd like for you to make to the rough draft copy of your book involves some misinformation that has started to float around the Internet. On about page 31, you reference that Joseph Edward McKenzie is a descendant of Col. G.T. McKenzie. He is NOT. He MAY be a relative (we're all related at Adam and Eve), but he is not a descendant. This is an error that has been recorded elsewhere. Someone said that Joseph Edward McKenzie, "son of Col. Gabriel Thornton Mackenzie" made the microfilms. I corrected that source, and I'd like to set the record straight with you. Col. Gabriel Thornton Mackenzie, who married Nellie May Larson ("Aunt Nellie" to me, though she was my great-aunt) had three daughters: Marylin (sic) Jean, b 23 March 1924, d 25 June 1937 in Peking China; Beverly Ann b. 31 October 1927; and Anita Viola b 23 July 1930. I remember Marilyn's ashes: Uncle Thornt and Aunt Nellie kept them in an urn, alternately on the mantle piece of their home on Lewis Mountain Road in Charlottesville VA and in the closet there, too. As a youngster, I didn't know what to make of that.

Beverly married Richard M. White on 16 October 1948, while Anita married Maj. Thomas Wolfe on 31 December 1953. I'm not sure if either of these girls are still alive. My parents would receive Christmas cards from them from time to time, but I haven't heard from them in years. Both of them lived in Florida. (And both of my parents have passed away).

In the list of Mackenzie men (and women, I guess) who served in various wars. Based on information in the Ancestry.com database (and some family papers), Col. G.T. Mackenzie served in both WWI and WWII (he was about 50 years old when he fought in WWII). When he came back from that war, he was "never the same," as I have heard my father say on numerous occasions. Apparently, Uncle Thornt was gassed by the Germans on some battlefield someplace, and it affected him, so the story goes. Anyhow, it seems to me that Col. Gabriel Thornton Mackenzie (that's the way he spelled it), U.S. Army Retired, should be listed on these pages.

One interesting thing: you can track the Mackenzies back to 1687 (page 160 of your book), but you have not found the "missing link" to Scotland or where ever we come from. I said that I have a genealogy that shows us going back to 1225. Alas and alack . . . I think I have fallen into the same trap as many other genealogists: I took a leap of faith in tying John McKenzie to a Collin McKenzie born in Ross Shire Scotland, died in St. Mary's County MD. Obviously, I need to go back and see what I did incorrectly! Oh well . . . something for another day!
