He died on 28 Jun 2017 at the age of 20 in Washington, D.C.. CUMBERLAND — Two CSX employees killed Tuesday night when they were struck by an Amtrak train worked out of the Cumberland train yard. The Metropolitan Police Department in Washington identified the men Thursday as Jake Lafave, 25, of Cumberland, and Stephen Deal, 20, of Meyersdale, Pennsylvania. Lafave, a conductor, and Deal, a conductor trainee, were struck and killed by the Amtrak train as they inspected the CSX freight train near Washington’s Union Station. They were reportedly following up on an alert that there was a problem with one or more of the train’s wheels. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating. Lafave was a second-generation railroader, the son of Chicago Division dispatcher Jim Lafave, according to an email sent Wednesday to company employees by CSX Chief Executive Hunter Harrison. Jake Lafave was a Michigan native and studied computer systems and networking at Washtenaw Community College in Ann Arbor, according to his Facebook page. He joined the company about four years ago, Harrison said in the email, and is survived by his parents and wife, Katelyn, whom he married recently. They honeymooned in Jamaica. Deal, who was with CSX for about two years, is survived by his parents, Donald and Loretta Deal. Deal had reportedly been with the company just more than two years. "Jake and Stephen worked out of Cumberland, Md., and were valued members of the team,” Harrison said in the email. "An investigation is ongoing and we will thoroughly review every detail to understand the accident’s cause and determine how similar incidents can be prevented from occurring in the future." Rob Doolittle, a CSX spokesman, said the company had no additional information to provide when contacted via email on Thursday. The freight train was traveling from Baltimore to Chicago, the Associated Press reported. It consisted of two locomotives, 49 loaded rail cars and nine empty cars, CSX said. The train was carrying paper products, machine parts, clothing and grain. The Amtrak train was traveling from Boston and New York to Union Station. Amtrak said none of the train's passengers or crew was injured in the accident, according to the AP. Cumberland Times-News, posted June 29, 2017
