- Burned about the head and body Tuesday, when an old canal boat along the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal near Wineow street, was swept by fire, James Clifford Winner, 51, a barber, of 453 Goethe Street, died at 1:30 a. m., today, at Memorial Hospital. Carl Johnson, 63, who lived in the abandoned hulk, was trapped by flames and was burned to death in his bed. Winner, who had been visiting Johnson, was able to crawl about 30 feet from the flaming boat, with his clothing afire, and had been in a serious condition since he was hurried to the hospital. A native of Frostburg, Winner came to this city about 15 years ago and had been employed in several local shops. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Ida Winner, Frostburg; his widow, Mrs. Rapheal (Parker)* Winner; four sons, Ver(letters missing) J., James H., John and Ralph, at home; four daughters, Mrs. Cle(letters missing) Miller, Mrs. Benjamin Miller, Mrs. Lawrence Izer and Miss Betty Winner, all of this city; four grandchildren; three brothers, Harry and Joseph, of Turtle Creek, Pa., and Frank, of Frostburg; a half-brother, Harry Winner, Frostburg, and six sisters, Mrs. Clara Youngerman and Agnes Winner, Rockville, Md.; Miss Bernie Winner, Texas; Mrs. Ellen Keating, Mrs. Anne Lucas and Mrs. Margaret McKenzie, Frostburg.
