- CUMBERLAND — Gary “Skip” James Layman, 78, of Cumberland, passed away Friday, Jan. 29, 2010, at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center. Born Jan. 19, 1932, in Cumberland, Mr. Layman was the son of the late Owen Alvin Layman and Edith Golden (Hager) Layman. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Kim Renee Layman; a son, James Richard Layman; three brothers, Walter, Lewis and Owen Layman; a sister, Phyllis Hager; and was the last surviving member of his immediate family. A United States Army/Air Corps veteran having served in Austria during the Korean War, Skip retired from Pittsburgh Plate and Glass after 35 years of service. He was a member of the Henry Hart Post 1411 V.F.W. and the American Legion Post 13. Skip loved spending time at Myrtle Beach, S.C., with his wife, his dogs and his many friends. He never met a person with whom he could not make friends. Skip never met a TV or remote that he did not love. Skip is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Jeanette Lee (Jenkins) Layman; his son, Steven Layman and his wife Rita, Cumberland; his daughters, Janice Stein and her husband David, Fayetteville, N.C., Tracy Summers and her husband Scott, Oldtown, and Terri Nelson, Cumberland; his grandchildren, David, Daniel, Philip Stein; Kristin Robinette and Amanda Layman; Brittney Summers; Sarah, Tyler, Danielle and Sadie Nelson; as well as 12 great-grandchildren; and his beloved canine friends, Coco, Penny and Pooky. Friends will be received at the Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Sunday, Jan. 31, 2010, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday, Feb. 1, 2010, at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Bernadette Ross and the Rev. W. Scott Summers officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park. The family requests that memorials be made in Skip’s name to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Attention: Linda Tiramani, 520 Eighth Ave., Seventh Floor, New York, NY 10018.
