- ELLERSLIE — Edward H. McCray Sr., 88, of Ellerslie, died Saturday, July 10, 2010 at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center. Born Feb. 10, 1922 in Locust Grove, he was the son of the late Frank B. McCray and Grace E. (Kraus) McCray. He was also preceded in death by one sister, Elsie McCray; and four brothers, George, Homer, Howard, and Frank “Bud” McCray Jr. Mr. McCray was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He served in Rhineland, Normandy, Ardennes, Northern France, and Central Europe with 1st Army, Fourth Division, 12th Infantry. He was the recipient of multiple honors including two Bronze Stars and the Purple Heart. Mr. McCray retired from P.P.G., where he was a crane operator. He belonged to the Pennsylvania Grange. Survivors include his wife of almost 68 years, Ethel Murphy McCray; three children, Kay Tharp and husband Tom, Mount Savage, James McCray, and wife Brenda, Annandale, Va., and Edward McCray Jr. and wife Rhonda, Johnstown, Pa.; 11 grandchildren, Thomas Tharp Jr., Cherie Howell, Jacqui Richards, Eric Tharp, Andrea McCray, James McCray Jr., Jonathan McCray, Elisha Porter, Edward McCray III, Jody McKenzie, Jill Rowles, and Jim Rowles; nine great-grandchildren, John Richards IV, Jessica Tharp, Thomas “Trey” Tharp III, Hunter Tharp, Scotty Belcher, Jillian McKenzie, Riley Dugan, Kara Hull, and Tommy Hull; and a very special niece, Helen Porter and husband George, Corriganville. Mr. McCray is remembered for the respect and assistance he gave to his neighbors who were his senior, as well as his joking personality. To his family he, by example, taught the importance of a continuous family commitment and a strong work ethic. Friends will be received at the Hafer Funeral Service, P.A., Chapel of the Hills, 1302 National Highway, LaVale, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral service will be conducted in the funeral home on Wednesday at 1 p.m. with Pastor Ken Korns and Edward McCray III officiating. Interment will be Restlawn Memorial Gardens, where military honors will be accorded by Post 13 Veterans Honor Guard. Serving as pallbearers will be grandsons, Tom, Eric, Jon-athan, James, Eddie, and great-grandson, John. Memorial contributions may be made to the League for Crippled Children, P.O. Box 267, Cumberland, MD 21501-0267.
