- CUMBERLAND - Rita Elaine Palmer, 91, of Cumberland, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 7, 2013 at her home. Born June 2, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Roy and Nellie (Dean) Drumm. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Donald; two sisters, Betty Mullan, and Bobbie McGeady; two nephews, Thomas McGeady Jr., and Michael Mullan, Sr. Elaine graduated from Girls Central in 1940 and from the Allegany School of Nursing in 1943. She worked in surgery at the Allegany Hospital on Decatur Street. After working as a dental assistant for Dr. Albert Cook, she began working for the State of Maryland as a public health nurse and was the first RN to help provide mental health services in Allegany County. She retired in 1984. Surviving are her two nieces, Pat (Sansom) Hirst with whom she resided and Debby Simmons and husband Brett of Cumberland; nephew, Robert Mullan and wife Debbie of Tipton, Pa.; foster son, Father Hormis Thottakara of Kerala, India. Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, (www.scarpellifh.com) on Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. A funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday at 1 p.m. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park. The family would like to thank the Western Maryland Heath System, especially the Hospice Service for their excellent care and kindness and support. In lieu of flowers the family requests the memorial contributions be made to the Western Maryland Health System Hospice Services, 1050 Industrial Blvd., Cumberland, MD 21502.
