Notes |
- Pfc. Crowe was killed in action in France on June 10, according to the War Department message received today by his wife, Mrs. Dorothy Knippenberg Crowe, 705 Princeton street. He participated in the invasion of Normandy with the 115th Infantry, 29th Division. He left Cumberland with Company G and had been in England since October, 1942. Pfc. Crowe attended Fort Hill High and was employed at the Celanese plant before entering the service. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gurney C. Crowe, reside at 108 Claybourne street. The Cumberland Evening Times, July 7, 1944
H. Frank Hinze, former first-sergeant of Cumberland's Company G. has settled the question of who was the first member of the outfit to lose his life during the invasion of Normandy, by pointing out that Pfc. Milton J. Crowe, son of Mrs. G. C. Crowe, 118 Clayborne street, was not a Company G man when he went into action. Crowe's brother, Lloyd Crowe, raised the question a few days ago when he cited that his brother was killed in action days ahead of Sgt. William C. Kirby in whose memory the local post of the 29th Division has been named. Hinze said that Pfc. Crowe was transferred out of Company G to Company F soon after the local outfit went into training at Camp Meade early in 1941. In England, Pfc. Crowe was again transferred to Company E of the 115th Infantry Regiment, 29th Division, Hinze said. The Cumberland Evening Times, February 18, 1946
