- FINZEL — George Junior Durr, 84, died Sunday, May 22, 2011 at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center. Born May 12, 1927 in Finzel, he was preceded in death by his parents, George Durr Sr. and Viola (Housel) Durr; and two infant daughters, Sandra Lee and Linda Faye. As a young boy of about 12 years, George worked around the livestock farm for Milton W. Race. In later years, he took a job at the Celanese in box building. He went into the Army in July 1945, and on Dec. 26, 1945, he went to Germany and was assigned to the 382nd Military Police Battalion. He arrived back in the states in February 1947, and received his military discharge on March 31, 1947. George worked hard in the clay mines on Big Savage Mountain as a digger for four years, at the same time going to Mechanic Trade School in Cumberland at night under the G.I. Bill. After graduation from trade school, he worked as an auto mechanic at Thuma Buick in Hagerstown, Thompson Buick in Cumberland, Potomac Motors in Cumberland (18 years) and AAMCO Transmissions in Cumberland. George opened his own shop, “Durr’s Transmission and General Repairs” on Welsh Hill in Frostburg, which he operated for 28 years. He also taught night classes at ACC-VoTech. He retired in February 1996, after 46 years as a mechanic. Mr. Durr is a member of the Frostburg Church of the Brethren, the Hostettler Church of Brethren, Pocahontas and Faith Independent Baptist Church, Frostburg. He is a member of Farrady Post 24 American Legion and was past Commander and Honor Guard. Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Mildred V. (Crowe) Durr; four sons, Gary Durr and wife Linda, Knobly Estates, W.Va., Dennis R. Durr and wife Amy, Pocahontas, Roger L. Durr and wife Roxanne, Finzel and Stephen and wife Marilyn, Duncansville, Pa.; five grandchildren, Roger Durr II, Amanda Kitis and husband Dwayne, Stephanie Amick and husband Craig, Justin Durr and fiancé Traci Dixon, and Ashlee Herschman and husband Tim; six great-grandchildren, Adam Durr, Garrett Kitis, Connor Strycker-Durr, Colton Amick, Harley Amick and Keegan Amick. Also surviving are two brothers, Elmer Durr and wife Leona, Frostburg and Lawrence Durr, Lexington, Ky; five sisters, Violet Lyons, Menifee, Calif., Evelyn Nicholson, Cumberland, LeEtta Hawn and husband Harold, Cumberland, Kathleen Berg and husband Robert, Taylor, Mich. and Janet Edminston, Cumberland; and numerous nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at Durst Funeral Home P.A., 57 Frost Ave, Frostburg, on Wednesday, May 25, 2011 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, May 26, 2011 at 1 p.m. with Pastor Larry Burkholder, Pastor Stephen Durr, and Pastor Dave Hatterfield officiating. Interment will be in the Frostburg Memorial Park. Military honors will be accorded by Farrady Post 24 American Legion Honor Guard. Condolences may be sent to the family at durstfuneralhome.com.
