Notes |
- at the WMHS-Braddock Campus. I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race. I have kept the faith. Born Dec. 9, 1921, in Hoffman, he was the son of the late Philip and Elizabeth (Sleeman) Brode. He was also preceded in death by his precious daughter, Tamara Brode Bradley, on Sept. 1, 2007. Also preceding Bill in death were four brothers, Carl, Jennings, Harold and John Brode; four sisters, Annabelle Whetstone, Marie Croston, Glenna Kallmyer and Hazel Michaels; and two infant siblings. He is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Hattie (Engle) Brode; one son, Philip Brode III, of Cincinnati, Ohio; one son-in-law, Kim Bradley, of Lakewood, W.Va.; one step-granddaughter, Jamie Hill and husband Jason; two great-step-granddaughters, Alex and Gracie Hill, of Ridgeley, W.Va.; and numerous nieces and nephews. “Bill” worked his dairy farm for 40 years, and he retired from the Allegany County Roads Department where he worked for 22 years, retiring as a foreman. Mr. Brode graduated from Beall High School in 1939, and he was a lifelong member of Saint Michael's Church, Frostburg. He was a lifetime member and past director of the Allegany County Farm Bureau and also Southern States Cooperative. He loved the outdoors and his vegetable garden. He will be sadly missed by all who ever knew him. He also loved his daughter’s dog, Sydney. Friends will be received at the Durst Funeral Home, P.A., 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Michaels Church, Frostburg, on Tuesday at 11 a.m. with Father Jim Hannon and Rev. George Harpold as celebrants. Richard Delaney will serve as Lector. Interment will be in Porter Cemetery. The family requests memorial contributions be made to the ALS Association, in memory of his precious daughter Tamara Brode Bradley, who died September 2007 with Lou Gehrig’s. Contributions to ALS Research (ALS Association, Western PA Chapter, Landmark Building Suite 550, 100 West Station Square Drive, Pittsburgh PA 15219-1122) will be used to advance research to help others who suffer from this horrible illness. Pallbearers will be Gary Edwards, Craig Elmer, Jason Hill, Harold Skidmore, Glen Kallmyer, Cody Sivic, and Thomas Lyons. Honorary pallbearers are Nat Workman, Louis Llewellyn, John Engle, James Porter, Robert Porter and Harvey McKenzie.
