- LAVALE — Richard Glenwood Cover, 74, of 12702 Cover Valley Drive, LaVale, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008, at his home. Richard was born on Aug. 8, 1934, in Cumberland. He was the son of Ralph G. Cover and Ethel M.(Bell) Cover. Mr. Cover was preceded in death by his grandson, Brogan Trey Hillegas and his sister, Beverly Ann Norris. Dick was active in the community. He served in the United States Navy Seabees. He was a member of Potomac Lodge 100, A.F. & A.M., Cumberland Outdoor Club, and Frostburg American Legion. He was a former of member of the Cumberland Scottish Rite and Ali Ghan Shrine Club. Dick was also a past President of the Cumberland Jaycees. Active in the Republican Party, he also ran for the Sheriff’s office. Dick and his father, Ralph Cover, were in the construction business for many years. Three of the most notable housing projects that they built were Bowling Green, LaVale Court, and Coverwood. In the 1960’s they stopped building homes and concentrated on building and running the Cover Valley Golf Course. This later became a shopping center that we now know as Walmart. Dick is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 49 years, Dr. Betty (Tyree) Cover; their two children, LuAnn Lewis, of LaVale and Rick Cover, of Huntington, W.Va.; and four grandchildren, Mirriah Corin Cover, Blake and Breyer Hillegas, and Bronwen Lewis. He is also survived by his brother, Roger B. Cover and wife Linda, of Ellerslie; his sister, Linda Holler and husband, Doug, of Cumberland; and his sister-in-law, Barbara (Tyree) Blank and husband Bill. Surviving also is Margaret Carter Smith, of Ohio, who was like a family member. Dick also has two aunts, Mary Harvey, of Bowling Green and Betty Wisenburg, of LaVale; many nieces and nephews, and their spouses and children. Dick is also survived by a number of cousins on both the Cover and Bell sides of the family. Dick enjoyed playing cards with his friends. For the past eight years, he was an avid reader of non-fiction, always reading two to three books at a time. Every year Dick and his family took pleasure in taking a beach vacation together. All of his family had a very special bond with Dick and loved him so much. He had a wonderful way of knowing how to make you laugh. Dick will always be remembered for his quick wit and that he never met a stranger. Being a grandfather was one of the greatest joys of his life and his grandchildren idolized him. Dick cherished every day and lived life to the fullest. He will be truly missed by his family and many friends. Dick’s wish was to be cremated and that wish will be carried out. Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene Street, on Tuesday, Sept. 16, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and on Wednesday, Sept. 17, from 7 to 9 p.m. Potomac Lodge 100, A.F. & A.M. will conduct a memorial service at the funeral home on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. A memorial service will be conducted in the funeral home on Wednesday at 8 p.m. with the Rev.
