- James Franklin Paulus, 68, of Cumberland, died Saturday, April 20, 2002, at his residence. Born Jan. 19, 1934, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late George James Paulus and Clara Shaw (McFarlane) Paulus. Mr. Paulus was retired from PPG Industries with 32 years of service; however, prior to his employment with PPG, he worked as a telegraph operator for the Western Maryland Railway. He was a 1952 graduate of Allegany High School and served with the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. During the early ’70s he volunteered as Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 79, Oldtown, he also volunteered for the National Park Service as a tour guide. An avid reader, he was well versed on many subjects. With his wealth of knowledge of birds and as a member of the Audubon Society, he volunteered to count and record migrating birds for the State of Maryland. He was a very dedicated supporter for the preservation and conservation of wildlife. He is survived by his former wife of 32 years, Shirley E. (Landis) Paulus, Cumberland; one son, Brian A. Paulus and wife Candice, Severn; one daughter, Darla Cowden and husband William, Cumberland; two brothers, George W. Paulus and wife Okshan, Phoenix, Ariz., and Thomas W. Paulus, San Jose, Calif.; two granddaughters, Ryanne and Devann Cowden, Cumberland. Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, PA., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Wednesday. A memorial service will be conducted on Wednesday at the funeral home at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Fred F. Parker officiating. Family requests that memorials be made to the Audubon Society.
