- Ray Ernest Frankenberry, 92, went to be with the Lord on Friday, Oct. 28, 2016, at the Lions Center, Cumberland, where he had been a patient for a very short time. Born on July 19, 1924, in Dutch Hollow, Mount Savage, Ray was the son of the late Charles G. and Pearl E. Frankenberry. In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by his wife of 73 years, Marian M. Frankenberry (March 17, 2016); eldest daughter, Carolyn Z. Frankenberry; brother, Clyde T. Frankenberry; sister-in-law, Annabelle Frankenberry; and brother-in-law, Clayton Robison. He was a veteran of World War II, serving aboard the USS Biloxi in the Pacific Theater. He was a gunner aboard ship, and earned two Silver, and three Bronze Stars during the war. Ray was also the lightweight boxing champion on board. The USS Biloxi earned nine battle stars while Ray was on board, of which he was very proud. Ray was a lifetime member of the VFW, Mount Savage. A truck driver by trade, he was employed for many years by Clopper Oil Company, but also had prior jobs working for the former Homer and Hedrick Concrete Company, Maryland Mold and Foundry Company, as well as operated his own service station for a short time in Cresaptown. He also worked for his son-in-law at Frostburg (Gulf) Chevron for 10 years before finally retiring. Surviving Ray are his daughters, Connie L. (Frankenberry) Brode, Cumberland, and Sherry S. Burkey and husband, Richard, LaVale; grandchildren, Gene Ray Furlow, Jenny R. Cessna, and Kelly L. Burkey; great-grandson, Coleton Furlow; sister, Eleanor L. Robison; and many nieces and nephews, whom he loves dearly. Ray also leaves behind two beloved cats, Idgett and Tank. Friends and family were received at Scarpelli Funeral Home, Cresaptown, on Sunday, Oct. 30, 2016. Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday, Oct. 31, 2016, at 11 a.m. with Chaplain Ron Welsh officiating. Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens. Military honors will be accorded by Fort Cumberland Post 13 Honor Guard. Pallbearers will be Gene Ray Furlow, Rick Robison, Steve Robison, Jim Frankenberry, Carson Yoder and, Joe Kight.Cumberland Times-News, October 30, 2016
