Notes |
- Richard W. DUER, son of Hugh E. DUER and Mary WHITE, died on 13 Nov 1943 in Germany. Staff Sgt. Duer was the husband of Mrs. Doris Coder Duer, 8 Second street, Ridgeley, W. Va. He had been reported missing in action since November 13, 1943, when he failed to return from an aerial raid over Bremen, Germany. The War Department reported that his plane was last seen in the vicinity of Wangeroog Island, one of the east Frisian Island group about five miles off the northwest coast of Germany. In the Army Corps since December 8, 1941, Staff Sgt. Duer served a year in Panama and South America on bomber patrol duty. He was subsequently sent back to the States for training as a flight engineer on a B-24 Liberator bomber and was then sent overseas in June 1943. Besides his wife, Staff Sgt. Duer is survived by his father, Hugh Duer, 15 Perry street, Ridgeley; three sisters; Ermina and Miriam, home; and Ruth, San Diego, Cal.; and one brother, Sgt. Edgar Duer with the field artillery in the Pacific war zone. The Cumberland Evening Times, December 4, 1944
