- FROSTBURG —Ruth Elizabeth Spates passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2010 from complications of dementia/Alzheimer’s disease at Northampton Nursing Home in Frederick. Ruth Elizabeth Logsdon was born in Akron, Ohio on July 8, 1919. Her parents, Enoch and Edna Logsdon returned to Eckhart when she was two-years old. She attended Eckhart Elementary School and Beall High School in Frostburg and continued her education at Catherman’s Business School in Cumberland and was later employed by the G. C. Murphy Co. in Frostburg where during a portion of the war years, she was promoted to Assistant Manager, a rare opportunity for women at the time. On Aug. 19, 1943, Ruth Logsdon and William Spates were married and lived for two years above the Spates family business, The Palace Theatre. At this time Ruth became a full-time homemaker as she and Bill began a family. In August of 1945, Ruth and Bill, along with infant daughter Patricia, moved to 78 Frost Avenue where the family grew with sons Edward and William Jr., and where they called home for 51 years. Ruth was a life-long member of the Eckhart Baptist Church. Ruth found great joy in her family, her friends and her home. In addition to being a co-owner of The Palace Theatre Company, husband Bill Spates was co-owner of The Silver Knob Sand Company in Oakland for which Ruth kept the books for over 30 some years. Ruth is survived by daughter, Patricia Spates Chaney and Coy R. Chaney of Frederick; and son, William Spates Jr. of Washington, D.C.; grandchildren, Pamela Chaney Baird and husband Mark of Thurmont, Brent Chaney and wife Staci of Fairfield, Pa, and Deanna Chaney Driscoll and husband Dale of Frederick; great-grandchildren, Jacob Chaney, Cody Baird, Dillon Baird, and Hannah Driscoll; great-great grandson, Logan Baird; sister-in-law, Virginia Gnegy of Florida; and several nieces and nephews. Ruth is preceded in death by husband, William F. Spates; son, Edward M. Spates; parents, Enoch A. Logsdon and Edna M. Dudley Logsdon; brother, Donald Logsdon; and sister-in-law, Anne Logsdon. Friends and family will be received at the Sowers Funeral Home at 60 West Main Street in Frostburg on Saturday, Dec. 11, 2010 between noon and 2 p.m. Service will commence at 2 p.m. in the funeral home with Eckhart Baptist Church, Pastor Matt Eichhorn officiating with interment to follow immediately at Saint Michael’s Cemetery.
