M. Winebrenner, son of Mrs. Flora Winebrenner, Slabtown, and the late Lawrence Winebrenner, was recently promoted to captain. Capt. Winebrenner, serving with the 71st Signal Battalion in Tokyo, was educated In Mt. Savage High School and enlisted In the Army in 1940. He trained in Mississippi and became a corporal shortly after his basic training. He was then sent to two years special duty in the Pentagon Building, Washington, after which he attended Officers Training School in Georgia. He left for Tokyo in 1948 where his wife, two sons and daughter joined him in 1949. His wife Is the former Miss Eleanor Brinkman, Cumberland. The Cumberland Sunday Times, January 28, 1951
Sunday, February 6, 2005 - Cumberland Times-News - ORLANDO, Fla. - Lt. Col. Victor Martin Winebrenner, 88, of Orlando, went home to live with the Lord on Saturday, Jan. 15, 2005. He was the beloved husband of Dorothy Winebrenner; cherished son of the late Lawrence and Flora Winebrenner; devoted father of Victor Winebrenner Jr. and his wife Claudia, from Jonesboro, Ga. and Robert Winebrenner and his wife Cynthe, from Colorado Springs, Colo., and Joy Moore and her husband David, from Aurora, Ill., and Lois Postil and husband Steve from Tucson, Ariz.; step-daughter, Shirley Davis and her husband Walter, from Debarry; and a step-son, Francis McComant and his wife Joan from Mount Prospect. He was the devoted brother of Rose Alice Hobbins from Ridge Manor, and Roberta McGuire from Frostburg, Md. He was predeceased by his first wife, Eleanor; and predeceased by his sisters, Blanche Helmick, Ann Daugherty, Jane Dorman, Marie Caughey and Virginia Wyzynski; and his brother, Murray Winebrenner. He is also survived by several grandchildren; step-grandchildren; great-grandchildren; step-great-grandchildren; and many loving nieces and nephews. He was born in Mount Savage on Dec. 7, 1916, where he attended school. He joined the Cumberland National Guard in 1935 and rescued many families, including his wife and newborn son, from high water during the flood. He was inducted into the Armed Forces in August 1944, attended basic training in Fort Macon, and then on to Fort Benning where he attended Officer Candidate School. He retired from the Army in 1965, and taught school until 1979. He was very proud to serve in the Armed Forces, and so proud to be an American. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery at 11 a.m. on Feb. 9, where he will be interred with Eleanor, the mother of his children.
He was buried on 9 Feb 2005 in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia.
