- She died on 21 Jun 1924 at the age of 5 in Frostburg, Allegany Co., Maryland.
Frostburg, June 23 – Evelyn Drees, aged four years, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Drees, Finzel, is dead, and Irene, infant daughter, was badly scalded, while Lily, age 3, another daughter, and Mr. Drees escaped injury in an auto wreck on the National Road near Long Stretch, about four and one half miles from here, Saturday night at 11:45 o’clock. The mother sustained cuts on the arms from a broken windshield. Mrs. Lillian Minnick, mother of Mrs. Drees, another occupant of the car, was unhurt. The family was on the way home from the Catholic mission being held in Grantsville and about one half mile from the top of Long Stretch sideswiped a car being driven by Samuel Eisel, Finzel, going toward Grantsville. He was accompanied by Grace Arnold. When the cars crashed, the machine driven by Mr. Drees swerved to the opposite side of the road and turned completely over with its six occupants underneath. The head of Evelyn was pinned between the ground and back of the front seat, causing a fracture to the skull. Mr. Drees, his mother-in-law and daughter Lily managed to get out of the wreckage with only a few scratches. Until help arrived, it was thought that Mrs. Drees and two children underneath the car were dead. When the wreckage was cleared, signs of life were visible, and the mother and her babes were rushed to Miner’s Hospital, this place. Harry Carter, taxi driver, happening along at the time, sped to the hospital with Mrs. Drees and Evelyn, while J.C. Todd and Miss Geraldine Smith, Cumberland, motoring toward Frostburg, followed with the infant close behind. Evelyn expired a few moments after reaching the hospital. Examination revealed that Mrs. Drees and her baby daughter received only minor injuries and yesterday afternoon were released from the institution.
Blinding headlights on the two cars is said to have been the cause of the accident. Both cars are so badly damaged that it was impossible to tow them to local garages without first making repairs at the scene of the accident. All four wheels on the Drees car were broken and axles badly bent, windshield broken and top completely demolished. The car driven by Eisel was damaged to the extent of about $200. The funeral of the child will be held tomorrow morning at 10 o’clock from the Catholic church in Pocahontas, near Finzel. Rev. Father Miller, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
