- CUMBERLAND — Reta Catherine Johnson, 61, of Cumberland beloved sister, aunt, cousin and friend, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, Feb. 25, 2016, at the Western Maryland Regional Health Center from complications following an extended illness. Daughter of Leonard and Bessie (McKenzie) Johnson, Reta was born March 1, 1954, in Cumberland. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her grandmother and many loving aunts and uncles, and a special nephew, Nathan Hutter. She attended Flintstone High School and Frostburg State University earning a degree in Elementary Education. She taught in the Allegany county school system as a second grade teacher at East Side School and as a substitute teacher. She taught preschool at Neuman Day Care Center, St Patrick's Church. She also worked at the Allegany County Library and at Shoe Show in the Country Club Mall. She is survived by her brother, Thomas Johnson and wife, Terri, Clarksville Tenn.; and her sister, Ann Hutter and husband, Paul, Cumberland; by her nieces and nephews, Amanda Washington and husband, Tony, Grove City, Ohio, John Hutter and wife, Shari, Clarksville, Joshua Johnson, Clarksville, Sara Clark and husband, Aaron, Cumberland, Christian Covington-Johnson and husband, Michael, Clarksville, and Lori Hutter and boyfriend, Seth Thomas, Hagerstown; by her great nieces and nephews, Alexandra and Kevin Washington, Fallon Johnson, Jackson and Riley Clark, and Liam and Arya Hutter. She is also survived by many loving cousins and friends including her friend, Fred Hughes and his daughter, Christina; her friend, Tom Sines and Regina, her roommate at Devlin Manor. Reta loved to read. Her collection of books sometimes over flowed her book shelves. She was a wonderful aunt who loved taking care of her nieces and nephews as if they were her own. She will be greatly missed by those who loved her. Her family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Western Maryland Health System for all they've done for her and the care they've given her this past week. Her nurses, Vanessa, Jill, Ronna, Brianna, Jess, Tanya, Zach and Tori. And for the kindness and care they have given her family at a most difficult time. They would like to also thank the staff at Devlin Nursing Home for the care given over this last year. According to Reta's wishes her body has been donated to science and organ donation.
