    Notes
    • CROFTON — Viola Mae MacKenzie died peacefully on February 20, 2001. She was nearly 94 years old at the time and a resident of the Crofton Convalescent Home in Crofton, close to her family. Born in 1907, she was a member of the Cumberland community for over 90 years. At the age of 4, she was the proud poster child for Coca- Cola Company. Throughout her adult life, she touched many young minds and hearts as she substitute taught music at various schools throughout the county. “Ms. Mac” loved teaching children, young and old, how to appreciate music and how to love singing. She is remembered for her energy, her active spirit and her loving generosity. She was the wife of M. Monroe MacKenzie, owner of a local hardware store and mother of two daughters, who survive her, Phyllis Coles of N.C., and Vera Elaine Taschenberger of Maryland. She is missed by her younger sister, Elizabeth Micheals, Kansas City, Miss.; her sister-in-law, Gertrude Moreland; two grandchildren, Brian Taschenberger, Crofton, Lisa Tascchenberger, Lima, Peru; and several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Through her love of singing, Viola was active in the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, most of her adult life. Even in her last days, one could hear her humming a favorite hymn. Viola was a member and past worthy matron of Cumberland Chapter 56, Order of Eastern Star, former Mother Advisor of the International Order of Rainbow for Girls and a charter member of the Mapleside Homemakers. She also sang in the Cumberland Choral Society for many years as well as being a member of the Cumberland Music and Arts Club. She outlived many of her friends and most of her classmates, but she will be remembered in the hearts of those who knew her forever. A small memorial service will be held at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church on Sunday April 22, 2001, at 1 p.m. The Cumberland Times-News, April 17, 2001
