Miss Kathleen Ann McKenzie, daughter of Mrs. Margaret McKenzie, 8 Williams Street, and Paul G. Stakem, son of Mr. and Mrs. Patrick J. Stakem, 511 Cumberland Street, were married at 9 a.m. today at a nuptial high mass in St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. Rev. John J. Tierney, recently ordained, performed the ceremony.

CUMBERLAND — Kathleen A. Stakem, 87, of Fall Avenue, Cumberland, died Thursday, May 8, 2003, at Lions Manor Nursing Home. Born Jan. 7, 1916, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Charles Leo and Margaret M. (Higgins) McKenzie. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Paul G. Stakem; one sister, Marion McKenzie; and two uncles, J. Bernard Higgins and Thomas Carroll Higgins. Mrs. Stakem began her career with BGS & G in May of 1960. During her career, she was the claims representative for both personal and commercial insurance. She retired in January of 1981. She was a parishioner of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Cumberland, and a member of the Sodality, a life member of the Sacred Heart Hospital Auxiliary, a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Cumberland Council No. 586, Knights of Columbus and a Sultana of Wamba Caravan No. 89, Order of Alhambra. Together with her husband, Paul, she served as a committee member and an ardent supporter of the Alhambra Catholic Invitational Tournament from its earliest years, and continued to lend her assistance through the 2002 A.C.I.T. Surviving are three sons, Paul J. Stakem and wife Mary Clare, LaVale, William F. Stakem and wife Susan, Odenton, and Michael P. Stakem and wife Diane, Cumberland; seven grandchildren, Stephanie McIntyre and husband Scott, Potomac Falls, Va., David Stakem, Baltimore, Timothy Stakem and wife Tracey, Woodberry Forest, Va., Shawn Stakem, Annapolis, Kelly Stakem, Cumberland, Jamie Stangel and husband Gregory J., Encino, Cal., and Meghann Travis, Baltimore; two great-grandchildren, Jack McIntyre and Brenden Stakem, who knew and loved her as “Kate the Great.” Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, Cumberland, Sunday. The Wamba Caravan No. 89 will conduct an Alhambra Memorial Service at the funeral home Sunday at 9 p.m., followed by a Christian Wake service. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St.Patrick’s Catholic Church Monday at 11 a.m. with Msgr. Thomas R. Bevan as celebrant. Interment will be in SS. Peter & Paul Cemetery.
