- Chambersburg, PA: V. Eleze Poe McKenzie, 350 Glen Street, Chambersburg, died June 19, 2010 at 5:45 pm. The daughter of Roy C. Poe and Ruth Brechbiel Poe, she was born December 26, 1914 in Chambersburg. She was a graduate of the Chambersburg High School and had a B.S. Degree in both secondary and elementary education from Shippensburg University with additional undergraduate work from the University of Virginia. In 1951 she received an A.M. Degree in English literature from Cornell University and subsequently did advanced graduate work in English at Cornell University and the Pennsylvania State University. Professor emeritus, English, Shippensburg University, Mrs. McKenzie was a well known local educator. Her teaching career which spanned forty two years, began with the Chambersburg Area School System, where she chaired the English Department of the senior high school and ended at Shippensburg University in 1977. She was a member of Zion Reformed United Church of Christ. Other memberships include the National Retired Teachers Association, The Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Retired Faculty, and Kittochtinny Historical Society. For a number of years she was a volunteer at the Chambersburg Hospital and at Meals on Wheels. She was one of the early trustees of the Gilmore Hoerner Endowment. She was an avid golfer and a world traveler. Her husband, Chester S. McKenzie, whom she married in 1941, died November 19, 2002. She is survived by two brothers: Charles and Theodore Poe, both of Chambersburg and three sisters: Mrs. Dorothy Lawyer and Mrs. Ruth Small, both of Chambersburg, and Mrs. Isabell Wenger, Lancaster. Two sisters and four brothers preceded her in death. Graveside services will be held in Lincoln Cemetery on Wednesday, June 23, at 1:00 pm with the Rev. Jeffrey Diller officiating. Arrangements are in charge of the Robert G. Sellers Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to Zion Reformed United Church of Christ, 259 S. Main Street Chambersburg.
