- John "Hack" Preston, 87, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 24, 2016, at Western Maryland Regional Medical Center. Born on Jan. 8, 1929, in Frostburg, he was the son of the late Clarence William and Anna Ethel (Murphy) Preston. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Ruth A. (Lindeman) Preston; daughter, Linda Kathryn "Kate" Preston McKenzie; son, Robert "Bobby" Preston; brothers, Rev. T. William "Bill" Preston and wife, Betty, Oscar L. Preston and wife, Betty, and Owen Preston and wife, Helen. Hack was a member of the Frostburg Church of the Brethren. He was a veteran of the Korean War where he served with the U.S. Army and following his discharge, he was owner and operator of Majestic Bowling Alley, Hack's Pool Hall, Hack's Bar & Grill, and the Red Wing Lounge. He was an avid Pirates and Steelers fan and was a member of the Brothers of the Bush. Hack never met a stranger and always greeted people with a hug and kiss. He loved telling stories of his Army days, his children and grandchildren and his love for Ruth. Surviving are children John W. Preston and wife, Cindy, Frostburg, Sandy Webber and husband, Paul, Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Donna Duna Preston, Fort Lauderdale, and Ruthie Folk and fiancé, Kevin Carroll, Cumberland; son-in-law, Darrell McKenzie; grandchildren, Adam McKenzie and wife, Jessica, Jennifer Sines and husband, Johnny, Mandi Raley and husband, Ryan, Jason Preston, Paul Webber II and wife, Ely, Bryon Folk and wife, Kayleigh and Jeff McKenzie; seven great-grandchildren, Olivia, Nolan, Preston, and Brennan Raley, Ryleigh McKenzie, and Malia Sines and one on the way in April of 2017; a sister, Eleanor Wiebrecht and husband, James; a brother, Jim Preston and wife, Betty. In accordance with Mr. Preston's wishes, he will be cremated. Family and friends will be received at Durst Funeral Home, 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg, on Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2016, from 4 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, Sept. 29, 2016, at 11 a.m. Interment will be in Finzel Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by Faraday Post 24 American Legion Honor Guard. The family would like to thank the fifth floor high level care unit of Western Maryland Regional Medical Center. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in memory of John, to Durst Funeral Home, c/o John Preston Memorial Fund, 57 Frost Avenue, Frostburg, MD 21532.
