- LENOIR CITY, Tenn. — Marian Angela Knieriem, age 94, a former resident of Hyattsville, Severn, and who had a home at Deep Creek Lake, passed away Tuesday evening, Oct. 14, 2014, in Lenoir City, Tenn. Marian was a premature baby, born at home and placed in a shoe box for a bed. She had three brothers and one sister, one brother and the sister died before age 2. Marian attended Saint Peter and Paul Elementary School, Ursuline Academy High School, and State Teachers College (Frostburg State University). Her parents passed away when she was 15 years old and she was raised by her Aunt Claire and Uncle French. She met her future husband, Conrad, in high school. They were married June 21, 1941, and moved to Washington, D.C. They had three children and when Conrad passed away, in 1953, she was left to raise them alone. Marian went to work for NSA, in 1954, and retired after a career as a cryptanalyst. She was a current parishioner of Saint Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church and formerly, SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Cumberland. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Conrad Lavin and Ralph Knieriem; parents, James and Bernadette Boyland; grandsons, Timothy and Sean Sternberg; brothers, James Boyland and Paul M. Boyland. Survived by her daughters, Patricia Wilson and Nancy Sternberg; son, Robert Lavin; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; along with several nieces and nephews. A visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, 2014, Saint Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, in Lenoir City.
