Charles William Butts, "Charlie", passed peacefully in his sleep at Community Hospice, Earl Hadlow Center for Caring on Wednesday, January 14, 2009. Charlie was born in Cumberland, MD on April 16, 1917, to Harrison Garfield and RoseLee McKenzie Butts. Charlie, one of eight children, would later be nicknamed by his siblings, "Kayo", after the old cartoon character in Moon Mullins; a name that his family used fondly throughout the years. Charlie met the love of his life, June, on August 3, 1940 and he enlisted in the U.S. Navy on November 27, 1940. He and June married on Aril 18, 1942. He served in WW II, and retired as a Master Chief, August 1, 1960. He continued with Civil Service another 20 years, serving as he had in the Navy, as an aircraft instrument mechanic. Charlie was a member of Masons, Grand Lodge of Rhode Island, and the Scottish Rite. Golf was one of Charlie's greatest joys in life. He started young, and played on into his retirement years. Charlie was predeceased by his parents, and all of his siblings, Wilma Hardman, Grace Butts, Lloyd, Paul, Homer, Robert Butts and Helen Tsatsanis. He is survived by his wife, June; children, Lloyd (Joyce) Butts, Deana (Patrick) Goodbread; grandchildren, Christie (Sean) Page, Michelle (Steve) Taylor, Kelly (Mark) Horn; great grandchildren, Cody and Carlee Taylor, Pierce and Brayden Page, and Alexis, Riley and Melanie Horn. He is also survived by nieces and nephews, Paula McIntosh (Joe) of Cumberland, MD, Gary Butts of Cumberland, MD, Dana Butts (Dianne) of Sterling, VA, Sandra Zaremba (John) of Westminster, MD. Graveside services will be held on Monday, January 19, 2009, 2:00 PM at JACKSONVILLE MEMORY GARDENS, 111 Blanding Blvd., Orange Park, FL with Chaplain Tim McDaniel, officiating. Family and friends will visit at Jacksonville Memory gardens funeral home from 1 until 2 PM prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Northeast Florida Community Hospice, 4266 Sunbeam Rd., Jacksonville, FL 32257, who provided Charlie and his family wonderful care and gentle comfort in the final days.
