- Father and Son Careers in Navy Follow Pattern - FROSTBURG-A son following in his father's footsteps is not too unusual, but the Navy careers of Carl D. Wade, chief torpedoman's mate and son of Mrs. Delia Wade and the late George Wade, Shaft, and his son Carl Jr., machinist's mate third class, are linked as closely as their names. Mrs. Wade was advised by her son recently of the action which prompted the above remark. The story began 23 years ago when Carl Wade Sr., joined the Navy. After service aboard destroyers and at various shore installations he received orders to the Submarine base. New London, Conn. Volunteering for duty aboard submarines he received his orders to his first boat, the Tang. Two years ago, while on a tour of shore duty as a recruiter in Pittsburgh, Pa., Carl Sr. enlisted his own son, Carl Jr., in the Navy. Following recruit training, Machinists Mate School and Nuclear Power School, young Carl received orders to his first submarine, the Tang. The Tang visited Yokosuka, Japan, recently and tied up along her sister, sub. the Wahoo. Both carry the name Wade on their crew rosters. Carl Sr. is the Chief-of-the-Boat on the Wahoo and Carl Jr. is in the Tang's engineering department. Carl Jr. had just completed his qualifications as a submariner in the Tang, and it was his father, Carl Sr., who presented him with his Silver Dolphins in a ceremony on the Tang, upon which Carl Sr. had also qualified for his Dolphins.
