In 1848 Charles T. married Cecilia Stovall of Augusta, the heroine of "Etowah Heights". Her father was Pleasant Stovall, a wealthy cotton merchant who lived near the old U.S. Arsenal. Her brothers were General Marcelus A. Stovall, Bolling Anthony, Thomas Pleasant Stovall, married Volumnia Cooper, eldest daughter of Mark A. Cooper and from 1878 to 1885 they lived in London, Eng., where he was foreign agent for American grain; was captain of the Richmond Hussars, Co. A, later given rank of colonel; his second wife was Geni Orchard of S.C., a writer and painter; he tried to introduce foreign immigration to the farms in Ceorgia and was appointed commissioner for the State; died at Etowah Heights in 1895. John Stovall, married Eloise Edwards, by whom he had several children; after the war lived and farmed at "The Glen". In 1861 Mr. Shelman erected the southern mansion which, after being saved by General Sherman, burned in 1911 from a defective chimney. Members of the family who were living there at the time saved a few valuable possessions. The children of Charles T. and Cecilia Shelman were: Cleo, Pleasant who was proprietor of the Shelman Hotel in Cartersville, Lelia Dallas; Robert, Charles T. Jr., Cecilia, Margaret. Mr. Shelman died at his home in November 1886. Mrs. Shelman, considered one of the brightest women of her day, died at her home in 1904. The only surviving member of this family, Charles T. Jr. built a home, called "Waverly Oaks", in 1897, near the old mansion. This home of Mr and Mrs. Shelman stands sentinel over the historical spot which is a strand woven in the romance of Georgia history. (www.gagenweb.org)
