Mary Ann Cathey was the first wife of Captain William Hamilton Moore. Her Father, George Cathey and Mother, Margaret Jean, last name unknown, came to America from Northern Ireland Mary Ann and William Moore were parents of 6 children: Sarah "Sally" Moore, married, John M. Montgomery James Hilliard Moore, married, Henrietta Sherrill Alice B. Moore, married, John Newton Penland Nancy Moore Margaret Ann Moore Thomas Moore Mary Ann Cathy, Baptism was April 3, 1743, Augusta Stone Presbyterian Church, Augusta County, Virginia William Hamilton Moore, born in Northern Ireland, came to America at the age of 15, in 1739. His Mother came over two years later with her youngest son. His Father and Grandfather had died fighting in the Irish War between Catholics and Protestants. He was a Captain, serving in the Revolutionary War, (Rowan County, North Carolina Militia in Indian skirmishes). He served under General Rutherford, his brother-in-law. Pension application S-183 and DAR service record #114,327. William Moore to Margaret Patton, his second wife, August 4, 1774 signed by Daniel Little. Daughters of America Colonists have erected a sign on Sand Hill Road in Buncombe County, North Carolina "Home Place of Captain William Hamilton Moore". Here on land grant #1031 granted in 1787, he erected the first blockhouse-fort of white settlers west of the Blue Ridge. Captain Moore and his troops camped on an expedition against Cherokee Indians. The Marker was erected by William Hamilton Moore, ggg grandson, Daniel Killian Moore, who served as Governor of North Carolina from 1965 - 1969.
