His father died in Tenn in 1879. He being the oldest child at home decided with his mother to occompany her brother to Texas. They arrived by train in Palestine Tx were he quickly found a job as a farm hand for 25 cents a day. He did this for a couple of years before buying his own farm in 1881 in Mills Tx just south of Teague. He countied this until selling and buying his father-in-laws farm that was just next to his in 1899. He died on that farm exaclty one week to the day after his beloved wife died. Family members say he greived himself to death. The doctor described his death on the death certificate as "Myocardial Decomposition (Death from the result of a broken heart)" He was laid to rest next to his wife 1 mile from their house in the cemetary that was once part of their farm.
