Notes |
- James was born in 1791 in South Carolina. He married Mahalia Butler on May 23, 1816 in Jones County, Georgia. From Georgia they migrated into Pike County, Alabama, then moved on into Butler County.
On March 3, 1855 the Orion Baptist Church gave a license to James Chandler to preach the gospel, and on September 7, 1856 he was ordained to the full function of the ministry. He left the county on December 1856. No one knows where he went. It is believed that he went to Texas, where two of his grandchildren settled in the counties of Gonzales, and Rusk. It is said he left to escape a bad debt (according to the Orion Baptist Church minutes.) He was excommunicated after that.
The Orion Baptist Church was located at China Grove, Alabama. He was essential in organizing the church on the 25th day of January 1828 with three white males, three white female members and one Negro woman.
The Conecuh River Association ( to which Orion Church formerly belonged) was largely anti-missionary. One man, in the Conecuh River Association, a minister, declared on one occasion that if these pests (missionaries) should come into his community he would use his rifle upon them. Orion Baptist was one of the earliest churches in South East Alabama.
