- Brady M. Smith served during the 1830's and 1840's as Sheriff of
Twiggs County, Georgia. He and his family moved to Nagodoches, Texas, late in 1849, and his fifth child, James Monroe Smith, was born there. By 1860, the family had been in Louisiana for a number of years, as the Federal Census shows the family in East Feliciana, Louisiana, with three new children.
He enlisted in Macon, Georgia, 4 September 1863, in the 6th Regiment, Alabama Infantry, Company F. Company muster rolls show he was last paid 31 December 1863, and was killed in action 18 July 1864 near Snickers Gap, Virginia. This was in the battle called Cool Spring with Lt. General Jubal Early leading the Confederate forces, which were victorious.
Brady M. Smith's widow, Lucinda, and the four youngest children appear on the 1870 Twiggs County, Georgia census.
