    Notes
    • Edwin Maxwell HORCHLER Sr. (son of John Henry HORCHLER and Margaret "Maggie" HOWARTH) was born on 21 Jan 1911 in Boswell, Jenner Township, Somerset Co., Pennsylvania. Dear Ms. Kelso:
Pursuant to your request, I have researched our records of former students and, according to your father’s file, he entered The Maryland School for the Blind on 2/28/1918 and graduated in June 1931.
I hope this information is helpful.

There is very little in his “file.” The only items are an application to the school, which we are not allowed to copy or send, and several pages of school grades, which are just numbers. I can, however, give you a little bit of information from the application. It states that Edwin Maxwell Horchler was born January 21, 1911, and resided at 243 Columbia Avenue, Cumberland, MD. The cause of blindness was scarlet fever at age 11 months. Religion was listed as Lutheran. His parents’ names were listed as Maggie and John Horchler, and his father’s occupation was listed as a machinist.

Between 1936 and 1979 he was an attorney in Cumberland, Allegany Co., Maryland. He received a degree in 1936 in law from the University of Maryland School of Law. He passed the Maryland Bar Exam the same year.

Even though Dad's name appeared frequently in the local papers, I enjoyed reading this article:

Meetings Of Women's Clubs Adamstown Club The Adamstown Women's Club presented a fine arts program May 29. The chairman, Mrs. Vernon Poole, was hostess. Mrs. S. E. Hoke entertained the hostess and club members at 10 o'clock with a musicale by Mr. Edwin Horchler, who is a guest at the home of Dr. and Mrs. S E Hoke. He gave the following program, which was much enjoyed: Minuet in G. Paderewski; etude, Areusky, Etude, Chopin; spinning song, Raff. Sonata, Beethoven. Etude. Chopin, waltz, Chopin. At 11 o'clock Mrs. Hoke served a delicious luncheon. During the luncheon hour Mr. Horchler delightfully entertained with semi-classical and popular music. The hostesses and their guests then drove to Hagerstown and visited the Washington county Museum of Fine Arts. June 4, 1935, The Frederick Post

The following is an email sent to Michael A. McKenzie in 2015:

Description: i have a little story to share about Mr. Horchler. I met him in 1957. I was working for Mr. Mangus, another attorney. I was filling in for his regular secretary. Your father(?) called and asked if I could please run over and help him with something. I went over right away. He told me he was blind. He asked that I place his fingers on the proper keys. I did. He thanked me and assured me he could handle it here on out. From time to time I have thought of this incident, just one of those fleeting things that we experience in our lifetime. Today I was thinking of him and started looking. I would really like to hear from someone. Thanks.
