- CUMBERLAND- Robert Lee Gilkey, 78, of Cumberland, passed away on June 5, 2014 at home. Born September 14, 1935, in Cumberland, he was the son of Orville and Ethel (Hicks) Gilkey. He was also preceded in death by his brother John “Jack” Gilkey. Mr. Gilkey was a United States Air Force Veteran and served during the Korean Conflict. He was employed by the Local 37 Union as an operating engineer. Surviving are his wife of 54 years Flora Gilkey; daughter Brenda Gilkey-Canfield of Cumberland; son Robert Lee Gilkey Jr., of New Jersey; grandchildren Ashley Canfield of Lonaconing and Krystal Canfield of Cumberland; great-grandchildren Dayton Canfield, Karras Canfield, Samyah Canfield and a granddaughter on the way in July; sister-in-law Marlene Russell and husband Richard; brothers-in-law William Muir and wife Sandy and Norman Smith; nieces and nephews. As per his request, he will be cremated and there will be no services. The family would like to thank the Western Maryland Health System Hospice for their wonderful care for Mr. Gilkey.
