- CUMBERLAND — Sarah Elizabeth 'Sis' McKenzie Shaffer, 95, of Cumberland, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 26, 2020, at Devlin Manor Nursing Home, where she had resided for 10 years. Born, in Frostburg, on Dec. 6, 1925, she was the daughter of the late David and Vera (Gordon) Dickey. In addition to her parents, Sis was preceded in death by her husbands, William McKenzie and Robert Shaffer; son, David 'Billy' McKenzie; son-in-law, Charles 'Al' Evans, whom she loved as if he were her son; brothers, David Dickey II and James Dickey. Sis was a graduate of Beall High School. Following high school, she was employed by the Celanese Corporation in Cumberland, where she met the love of her life, Bill. Later, Sis was employed by Gee Bee's Department Store in Cumberland. Sis was a volunteer with the Cumberland Fire Department program to deliver smoke alarms. She was a member of the Cresaptown Eagles. Sis was a special lady. Her smile was beautiful, and she had wonderful friends whom she loved. Most of all, she was known for her kindness. She was the kind of person who never met a stranger. Sis enjoyed sewing, crocheting, and sewing dresses for her dolls and teddy bears. Sis is survived by her daughter, Joan Evans; granddaughters, Ann Abe and husband, Fred, and Mary Rothrock; great-grandson, Freddie Abe and wife, Kelly. Sis is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 15205 McMullen Hwy., SW, Cresaptown, on Thursday, Dec. 31, 2020, from 11 a.m. until noon. There will be a funeral and committal service conducted at the funeral home at noon with Chaplain Bruce McBride officiating. Burial will be in Frostburg Memorial Park.
