- John Joseph MCKENZIE was born on 20 Sep 1915 in Cresaptown, Allegany Co., Maryland. He died as a World War II casualty on 24 Feb 1945 in Germany. Killed - Sgt. John J. McKenzie, 29, of Cresaptown, in Germany, February 24. Sergeant McKenzie was the son of Mrs. Alice Clayton of Cresaptown. He entered the Army on May 9, 1941, and sailed for overseas duty in October, 1942 with Company F of the 145th Infantry Regiment in the 29th Division. He took part in the D-Day invasion of France and was wounded four days later. He was cited by Major General Gerhardt. Before going into the Army, he was employed by the B. A. Mason Dairy of Cresaptown. Other survivors of Sgt. McKenzie are his step-father, Brooks Clayton, and the following brothers and sisters: Pfc. Clarence McKenzie with the Seventh Army in France; Samuel, Thomas and William McKenzie, Mrs. Annie Lease, Mrs. Helen Lease, Mrs. Margaret Clayton, and the Misses Nellie and Theresa McKenzie, all of Cresaptown. The body of Sgt. John J. McKenzie, 29, son of Mrs. Alice Robison Clayton and the late Albert McKenzie, RFD 5, this city, who was killed in action February 24, 1945 near Julich, Germany, will arrive here tomorrow for reburial. Sgt. McKenzie was born September, 20, 1915 in Cresaptown. Before entering the service May 7, 1941, he was employed by the B.A. Mason Dairy, Cresaptown. He was a member of the St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Cresaptown. After embarking for overseas duty in October, 1942 with Company F, 115th Infantry, 29th Division, Sgt. McKenzie participated in the D-Day invasion of France. He was wounded four days later. His mother received a certificate from Major gen. Gerhardt saying that Sgt. McKenzie had been a member of the 29th Infantry on D-Day and a member continuously from June 6, 1944 until the capture of St. Lo on July 18, 1944. He was killed while acting as a squad leader on the first day of the 29th Division attack on the Ruhr River. He is survived by his mother and step-father, Brook Clayton, Cresaptown; four brothers, Samuel J., Thomas E., William G., and Clarence M. McKenzie, all of Cresaptown; and four sisters, Mrs. Samuel Lease, Mrs. Thornton Lease, and Mrs. George Clayton, all of Cresaptown, and Mrs. Nellie E. McKenzie, at home. The body will be taken to the residence of his mother upon arrival. Cresaptown Post No. 209, American Legion, will be in charge of the military honors.
