M. Monroe MacKenzie, 79, of 720 Louisiana Avenue, the retired owner and operator of the South Cumberland Hardware Company, Virginia Avenue, died Wednesday at the Lions Manor Nursing Home, where he had been a patient for one month. Born in Cumberland, he was a son of the late Ernest MacKenzie and Edith (Brotemarkle) MacKenzie. Mr. MacKenzie was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, where he was a vestryman for more than 20 years; a member and past worshipful master of East Gate Lodge 216, AF and AM; Scottish Rite Lodge of Perfection; Ali Ghan Shrine Temple; Cumberland Chapter 56, Order of the Eastern Star, the Senior Citizens Club and the American Association of Retired Persons. He is survived by his widow, the former Viola Moreland; two daughters, Mrs. Phyllis Coles, Ocala, Fla.; Mrs. Vera E. Taschenberger, Bowie; one brother, Luther MacKenzie, Hanahan, S.C.; two sisters, Mrs. Adeline Martin, Cumberland; Mrs. Helen Taylor, Marathon Bay, Fla., and two grandchildren. Friends may call at the Silcox-Merritt Funeral Residence Thursday. Services will be conducted Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church by the Rev. Richard E. Manning, pastor. Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. Friends will be received at the church one hour before the funeral. East Gate Lodge 216, AF and AM, will hold a memorial service at the funeral.
