- Richard E. Scarlett Candler, N.C. – Richard “Dick” E. Scarlett, 66 of Candler, passed away Saturday, May 15, 2004, at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Ashville (sic). Dick was the son of the Late Vernon “Jim” Scarlett Sr. and Madeline (Clinedinst) Scarlett. He served our country in the U.S. Air Force with S.A.C. (Strategic Air Command). Dick is survived by his loving wife, Connie (McKenzie) Scarlett; two daughters, Shannon Nichols, Cumberland and Tonya Malinowski, Hopkinton, N.H.; five brothers, Ronald Scarlett, Orlando, Fla., Leo Scarlett, Annapolis, Robert, Vernon and Kenneth Scarlett, all of Cumberland; one sister, Tina Scarlett, Cumberland; two stepsons, Randy Twigg, Chapin, S.C. and Allan Twigg, Frostburg; and 14 grandchildren. Friends will be received at the Durst Funeral Home, P.A., 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be at the funeral home on Wednesday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Joe Pennick officiating. Interment will be in Rest Lawn Memorial Gardens, LaVale. Military honors will be accorded at the graveside by members of Farrady Post 24 American Legion Honor Guard. Pallbearers will be Allan Twigg, Randy Twigg, Austin Williams, Bernie Nichols, Anson Malinowski and Ryan Scarlett. Honorary pallbearers will be Dick’s brothers and sister.
