- John H. McKenzie, 89, of West Pitt Street, Bedford, died Thursday, Sept. 18, 1997, at James E. VanZandt Medical Center in Altoona. He was born Jan. 19, 1908, in Westernport, Md., a son of the late Hillary and Ruth McKenzie. On April 4, 1942, he married the former Josephine Mae Cook. She survives, along with a brother, William McKenzie of South Gate, Calif.; a sister, Louise Bittinger of Frostburg, Md.; three nephews and two nieces, including two, Leo C. McKenzie of Bedford and Barbara Lutton of Rochester, Pa., who were raised by Mr and Mrs. McKenzie. Also surviving are six great-nephews and two great-nieces. He was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters. Mr. McKenzie was a World War II veteran and a retiree of the Pennsylvania Department of Highways. He was a member of Bedford VFW Post 7527 and Bedford American Legion Post 113. He carried the flag in the Fort Bedford Honor Guard for a number of years. In his retirement, he also enjoyed helping auctioneer Stanley Claycomb as a runner. Funeral services: 1 p.m. Saturday at the Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home, with the Rev. Angelo Patti officiating. Burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Manns Choice, with military rites conducted by the Fort Bedford Honor Guard. The Bedford Inquirer, September 26, 1997.
