    Notes
    • NOTE: Frances’s mother was Mary Elizabeth Cook and her father was William Howard Maloney, a scout with the McNeill’s Rangers during the Civil War. On February 21, 1865, McNeill’s Rangers quietly infiltrated the city of Cumberland, MD at the break of dawn and was successful in kidnapping Generals George Crook and Benjamin Kelly. General Kelly was in the Barnum Hotel and General Crook was in the Revere House. The Barnum Hotel and the Revere House were both located in Downtown Cumberland close to where the old YMCA is. I think at least one of the buildings is still standing, but I’m not sure. At the time of the “kidnapping” Cumberland was garrisoned by 7,000 federal troops. The Rangers were able to get in through the enemy lines and get back out with the generals without sounding any alarms or getting caught. After the war, William H. Maloney resided in Romney, W. Virginia and was a Justice of the Peace. There was a pamphlet written by J.W. Duffey, Washington, D.C. titled “Two Generals Kidnapped” A complete account of the capture of federal generals George Crook and Benjamin Kelly by McNeill’s Rangers, and a roster of those who participated in the raid in February, 1865 – A unique incident in the War Between the States. Printed by the Moorefield Examiner, Moorefield, WVA, February 1944. William’s picture is in this pamphlet.

      Hello Cousin,

I just wanted to correct some information that I have about my 3rd great grandfather; William Maloney. First, his father was Daniel Maloney (1804 to 1875) and Caroline McDonald (1809 to 1888). He was born in Romney in 1845 and also died there in 1927. He was served as a judge there and his middle name is Henry not Howard. I come from Frances’ younger brother William Henry Jr. who was born in 1877 and died in 1942 also in Cumberland. If you want the documents from Ancestry including the census data, marriage certificates and Grave details, i would be more than to supply them.

      Have a nice day
