Bernadette C. Shumaker FROSTBURG - Bernadette C. "Bernie" Shumaker, 77, of Frostburg, died Tuesday, June 22, 2004, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland, following a long and courageous battle with multiple myeloma. Born Dec. 24, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Vincent E. and Mary M. (Capel) Weimer. Mrs. Shumaker was a graduate of Beall High School, Class of 1944, and was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, Frostburg. She retired as a telephone operator for Frostburg State College, and was formerly a switchboard operator for the C & P Telephone Co. She managed and operated "Bernie's Crafts," creating floral arrangements. Her favorite pastime was quilting and giving them as gifts. She enjoyed traveling and animals, especially dogs, but the most important thing was her true love for her family. Surviving are her husband of 58 years, Franklin P. Shumaker; one daughter, Susie Bucchino, Frostburg, and children, Matthew and Sarah; three sons, Stephen Shumaker and wife Sheri, Fort Ashby, W.Va., and children, Bryan, David and wife Erin, Kristin, Justin, Joshua, Elizabeth, and Madison, Gary Shumaker and wife JoAnn, Frostburg, and children, Amy and husband Jeff, and Aaron, and James Shumaker and wife Kimberly, Belcamp, and children Ryan, Emily, and Kevin; three great-grandsons, Tyler, Kyle, and Jeffery; two sisters, Rosemary Murray, Baltimore, and Joanne M. Stevens, LaVale; one brother, William V. Weimer, Frostburg; and numerous nieces and nephews Friends will be received at the Durst Funeral Home, P.A., 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg, on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Christian Wake service will be held at 3:45 p.m. at the funeral home by the Rev. Father Doug Kenney. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Frostburg, on Friday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Father Doug Kenney, as celebrant. Interment will be in the Maryland State Veteran's Cemetery, Flintstone. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. The family requests memorials be directed to the American Cancer Society, 111 S. George St., Cumberland, MD 21502 or the Allegany County Animal Welfare Society, Cumberland.
